To be serious for a change, these things appear all over Yorkshire and Lancashire, not sure about elsewhere. Erected by the great and the good back in Victorian times as, (I think), status symbols, they are wonderful monuments. Thankfully some of the splendid mill chimneys which began this thread wander also survive although largely disused.

 

Yep, “cat’s whisker” adjusted this morning.

 

Darwen Tower, more correctly, Jubilee Tower was built by public subscription to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee but also celebrated the freedom to roam of the local moorland following incidents of mass trespass by the locals.

India Mill chimney was built by local entrepreneur, Eccles Shorrock and completed in 1867. It is modelled on an Italian campanile and is now a listed structure. Eccles was a very distant relative through marriage of Mrs W; he died bankrupt.

 

Not digital though..

 

The campanile style tower outside Leeds station is nice. But my favourite is the monument at Stoodley Pike above Hebden Bridge. Originally built in 1814 to commemorate the fall of Napoleon, it has collapsed twice in storms and been rebuilt to its present form.

 

We also have Wainhouse Tower on the outskirts of Halifax.

 

Which you can ascend on certain bank holidays.....
