Three Letter Acronyms, or TLA's, are not a West Somerset invention. They've been part of the jargon of on-line communities since the 1980's when people accessed bulletin boards using dial-up modems and connect time was money, so TLA's kept our connect time down and saved us money on our phone bill.
Today they're used to save time typing out terms in full on web forums and phone text messages, and of course on messaging systems like Twitter where there is a limit to the number of characters a message can contain.

Code words and abbreviations go back much further than that, probably to the days of needle telegraph instruments....
    http://www.railwaycodes.org.uk/misc/telegraph.shtm

The 1980s British Rail code book (catalogue number BR30064) had the preface thus:
The code words for phrases in regular use contained in this booklet must be used, where applicable in message transmitted via National Teleprinter Network, Telex or TOPS, but not in messages to members of the public.

Some codes like OPPOS and FABRIC are still used on operating notices.

    Cheers, Neil

    Hi,

As the person who wrote the timetable, the main thing that makes it different to previous years is the fact that I've moved the crossing point for some trains from CH to BL, meaning trains have enough time to make trips to Norton Fitzwarren which hasn't been done at the last few Winter Steam Festivals. If you find the previous hourly timetable used you'll see plenty of difference.

If you have any feedback on what you would have done differently please let me know, I'm keen to hear people's ideas.

As far as I am aware, the Quantock Belle will be available for Breakfasts.

The Hawksworth Saloon however will be reserved for contributors to 9351's recent overhaul only.

    Many thanks,
    Seb

I think commonly used Acronyms are accceptable such as WSR, KWVR etc as theyare well known.

If you did not know it was about the WSR, would you know what "Decent having WTT for WSF. wants the extra spice added I can't see much differnce." meant?
People moan about the use of Jargon this is the same thing.

    1. I would imagine that anyone reading this on the WSR thread would know it is about the WSR

    2. WTT is used on all railways - it is not exclusive to the WSR, therefore just about everyone realises what it means.

    3. WSF will be recognised by anyone who goes to a Winter Steam Festival on any preserved line, again, not exclusive to the WSR.

If you allow diesels as well as steam, shouldn’t it be the Winter Train Festival instead?

(Not all lines have a WSF, though I suspect WTF is a common enough feeling at times for readers of this thread ;)

Ian, this set me wondering when the the expression 'working time table' first came into use
for operating ( rather than Public ) Time Tables.

I have a LC&D February 1866 timetable which is titled 'Private Time Table"
A GWR October 1886 is titled "Service Time Table "
A L&SW November 1886 has "Working Time Table"

    Any thoughts anybody please ?

Nice to see the photos of the relay site at Mineral line bridge.
Looks a very restricted site in a cutting.
What is the overall length of the relay?

I thought the GWR used "Service Time Table" until after nationalisation - indeed, until about 1955, but other railways used "Working Time Table" or "Working Timetable". However, I couldn't tell you when the latter first appeared

    Salvage Hunters

Is this something of interest to the WSR?

Salvage Hunters, the well-loved and most-watched Quest TV and Discovery Network show, is on the hunt for collectors and museums to feature on the upcoming series.

We follow decorative antique expert Drew Pritchard as he travels around various locations in the UK and abroad on his quest to find and buy unusual objects with an interesting history.

Drew really visits everywhere - beautiful estates, old family businesses, museums, factories, collectors and iconic religious sites buying all sorts along the way – from railwayana to 6ft 1980s disco balls.

Now in its fourteenth series and airing to over half a million people in the UK and millions more worldwide, this is a great opportunity to promote your museum or collection to a broad audience, make some money and celebrate the history and heritage of the UK.

If you think you fit the bill or know somebody that might then don’t hesitate to reach out and a member of our team will be in touch to arrange a visit.

Often referred to as Employee Timetable in the US & required to be carried along with the Rule Book.

If not already viewed, I suggest that members look at the image of Crowcombe Heathfield station on the camera at WSR.org.

I think the staff and contractors have done a splendid job of transforming the station into a Winter Wonderland.

To me it shouts out that, far from being a railway on its knees, it has tremendous ambition and will grab every opportunity that it’s offered.

    Well done to all concerned.
