An unrestored Barry loco! For years I watched the bits slumber on wagons in the Toddington north carriage siding. Then, at last, agreement was reached with the owner and a new company has been formed to get this one up and running. Jubilation!

However, it's all very well feeling happy that someone else is doing the work/paying for it, so yesterday I decided to put my money where my mouth is, and became a shareholder.

Please join me! Many hands make light work. An application form can be downloaded from their website. They need £450.000 and then a new tender.

Some more details on progress on loco 76077. The 1st AGM of the society was held recently at Toddington. You can read more about it via this link.
    http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2019/12/76077-agm.html

Several subjects are covered in this GWSR "Heritage Herald" article; the bit on 76077 is the 2nd item.

Since I wrote the post above in May and signed up as shareholder the frames have been sent away for restoration with LMS at Loughborough, paid for by the initial share applications. I also learned at the AGM that while we have no tender, we do have the kit to make up the frames for one, obtained in a swap with the frame of a GWR tender the previous owner had secured. So things are looking a rather brighter there.

6 months have passed and I thought to myself, what else can I do to help? It seems that what would really help is a steady income from lots of small contributions. Each of these counts towards shares purchased, and you get a certificate once a year with the amount purchased over the last 12 months (If I understand this correctly).

I signed up for £25 a month, the price of a meal. Would anyone care to join me? The loco is pretty complete, it just needs the usual amount of dosh to get it up and running after a visit to Barry and x years of storage. It's perfectly do-able, but needs help.

Here is the share application form:
    https://standard76077.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/190123-TSLL-share-application-form.pdf
and this is a standing order form if by monthly instalments:
    https://standard76077.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/180623-TSLL-BANKERS-ORDER-FORM.pdf

We've got a friendly committee and an experienced engineering director in charge of the job. We're all working members of the GWSR too, we've seen the loco in bits on the headshunt and want to get something done. Do help us!

Like others perhaps, I've seen the bits at Toddington over the years and have heard or read some word saying the group has plenty of the parts. What i cant find is an actual list of what the group already has and what is still needed and the full extent of the work.

I'm teetering on the edge of filling in a share form, but with so many deserving loco's out there it would be good to see more detail. Perhaps if anyone was at the agm they could expand all our knowledge please.

    Hi JJJ,

I asked our Engineering Director for you, and pretty much by return I got the following:

We have never published a list of what we have as we don't want everyone knowing what we have in store. Suffice to say we have a full set of motion either original parts or new forgings which are currently being machined. The biggest single item we are missing, with the exception of the tender, is the reversing gearbox. There are other groups who have already had patterns made and new parts cast so whilst not being cheep it's quite doable. Fittings wise we are missing 1 injector and a duplex ejector valve and a set of cylinder relief valves. We are already on the case with the cylinder relief valves and the duplex valve so its only the injector to source. SVR or South coast steam should be able to supply at a cost of approx £4500. Other than that a new chimney is being sourced together with lots of small pipe fittings etc.

As restorations go 76077 is quite straightforward. We will continue to purchase parts for the tender as and when they become available (we have just ordered a drawhook as part of a joint deal with MHR). But the intention is to run the loco initially with a loan tender. We would like to see the loco running as quickly as possible and hopefully while Chris Hinton (initial owner) is still with us.

Hope that answers any questions, the only other thing to say is that whilst 76077 may not be a glamorous loco, or a big namer, she is ideally suited to the GWSR's operations and is easy to maintain for the future. It will also be something different for the railway like P&O, adding variety to our motive power collection. We do hope people will join us in our quest to return her to her former glory for all to enjoy.

    And so do I !

Hope that has helped with the teetering :)

Go on JJJ, you know you really want to! Regrettably, I have 2807 reasons why I can't at the moment. (An imminent overhaul awaits!)

These locos are well suited to heritage lines and deserve the title of "pocket rocket".

I'm very glad to hear progress is now being made. That such a useful beast has been forgotten for so long always baffled me.

As I understand it the loco had a single owner to begin with, and he didn't manage to complete what he started. The loco then ended up at the Toddington North headshunt on a number of flat wagons. I am a PWay volunteer and often walked past it with the same thought as you.

Eventually some of us volunteers on the railway decided that we really must do something to complete the restoration, and we were able to convince the owner to put his shares into a new company, which is the vehicle now asking for support.

Everyone agrees with you that the loco is ideal for our railway, so I am hoping that you can sign up for a monthly amount, like I did.

Good update in latest Heritage Railway mag. Looks like now inside and being worked on.

Rewheeled, ponytruck, refurbished cab and smokebox shell done by end of the year.

Just straightened frames from a historic heavy shunt in BR days

Smaller components being manufactured plus a new drag box.

So no what you'd call a slow start! Excellent news.

Question for 76xxx fans - I can recall one of these dumped (I can think of no other description) on the Strathspey Railway ca. 1988? Can anyone tell me which one it was? Or have I mistaken it for something else?

You possibly saw one of the Ivatt 2mt 2-6-0s; 46512, 46464 or 46428.

my bet would be 46512 would have been seen at Strathspey because 46464 went to Brechin / Caledonian Railway about this time or some point soon after?

Yes, that's the one. It was summer 1988 I saw it. Thank you, my memory playing tricks again!

Just thought a quick update was due on the engine. As pointed out, there is a list of opportunities to sponsor items on the locos website which can be found here
