You are right of course. Sorry to say it's a reflection of recent experiences that have involved the equivalent of washing a few hundred pounds down the drain. I have to say that it makes those who turn out to photograph steam and then chunter about not getting perfect light conditions or discovering cess to cess fog the lucky ones. :)

Copied from the PRCLT fb page

"Unfortunately the decision has been made to withdraw the Duchess from its remaining tours of 2019. This is due to a OTMR fault ( data recorder ) which prohibits it from entering service. Also whilst working the return of the York Yuletide Express the reverser became progressively tighter to operate. This issue alone requires some in-depth investigation by our engineers. The Duchess has now lost a considerable amount of income so as always any donations would be welcomed."

I can't say that I have much sympathy for those who book seats on a tour knowing that there is always the risk of the unforeseen happening, then instead of turning up and making the best of it, moan about money down the drain. Not sure what the relevance is of photographers complaining about weather/lighting conditions has to do with it either.

    A world of difference.
Scenario 1 - No steam, or wrong route etc and money spent resulting in not what you originally paid for.
Scenario 2 - Steam seen, photograph taken at minimum cost. Just not the perfect shot.

We all have to take a calculated risk on these charters. Were we not to do so these companies would find their balance sheets to be even more precarious - something I am sure they are aware of. All the punters can hope is that every possible step is taken in the planning and the preparation of train and motive power to minimise potential problems.

Happy to take all that on trust. There is no real alternative. And as for the Lindum Fayre, I hope that things all come together for this trip.

Whenever something goes wrong all we seem to get on here is whinging and speculation from those who have no knowledge of what’s going on.
Can’t we just offer sympathy to the owners of 6233 who have lost valuable revenue and thanks to others who have conjured up a replacement loco at, I suspect, considerable cost.

Minimum cost? Do me a favour! Some members of Nat Pres travel hundreds of miles to produce superb images/video's that they post on here for everyone to enjoy. Judging by the reaction many of their efforts generate, the majority of posters appreciate their work. Be careful you don't fall off your very high horse, because you'll hurt yourself!

There are 'enthusiasts' who, when they've bought a ticket for one of these railtours, want a cast iron guarantee, that everything that the brochure says will happen, does happen. Hopefully, on the day, it does happen. but UNFORESEEN situations arise that have to be dealt with, the equipment planned is not new, old stuff develops problems that, with the best will in the world, can't be foreseen.
For those who don't want to accept that.........fine............don't, keep your money in your pocket.
The will be a lot of 'joe public' folk who will have booked on the Lindum who will (I'm sure) enjoy their day out and (fingers crossed) have U of S A on the front.
There are some enthusiasts who seem to delight in complaining and moaning, and they're are others who accept that unfortunately...........s*it happens.

Yes they do - never said they didn't. And I'm sure that a week in the West Highlands chasing the Jacobite can't be done on peanuts either.

#25 wasn't about that. It was in response to #24. I was comparing a day on a train with any manner of compromised or tweaked arrangements for in excess of three figures with driving to a stunning location not a million miles from home on a few gallons of fuel and then griping about a lack of sun.

Either way it's all part of the 'mix of uncertainty' and something that travellers and photographers alike have to live with but on a good day it's all something to celebrate.

You seem to forget that if it wasn’t for us loyal supporters of the various train promotors spending large amounts of money not just on the tours but getting to and from which can sometimes double the cost, you linesiders would have nothing to photograph

As railway enthusiasts we are all in this together, most serious linsiders put in cash to help keep things running or work hard in the practical and sometimes unpleasant tasks vital to keep steam running.

It's perhaps also worth remembering that most of the images found on the tour promotors websites and brochures are provided free of charge by linesiders, many of whom spend £1000s each year to obtain them. While I doubt if anyone's ever been daft enough to test it out, I suspect that there'd be a considerable reduction in bookings were the marketing material completely devoid of visual interest to inspire members of the public to get out their credit cards. You may well find that without those images, there'd be far fewer tours for you to ride on...

As Johnb says, we're all in this together. Sometimes people's contributions can be less obvious than others and not everyone can afford to contribute equally whether in time or cash, but all should be valued and encouraged.

I'm booked on this trip and although I did book it with 6233 in mind, I'm quite happy that all being well it's 60009 on what could be one of her last trips out of Kings Cross.

Just received an email from RTC and the trip is now being worked by Diesel as 60009 has encountered mechanical issues on its LE movement down to Southall. A real shame but these things can't be helped and it wasn't for a lack of trying so a thanks to everyone involved for trying their best in getting the loco running.

I'm booked on The White Rose next week so could get a possible second bite of the cherry with 60009 next week if its a quick fix.

Funnily enough I was just starting to plan filming this trip, and in doing so checked to see where 60009 was. Made it as far as Kings Langley it seems.
