Exactly! I don't care if the diesel gives a shove or not...having a warm train for the kids is much more important :) Looking forward to this Sunday with the whole immediate family (Grandad's treat). We had BIL over Shap last year, so the 'circular tour' will be interesting and will bring back distant memories of going spotting in Yorkshire from Lancaster (on the Wennington - Hellifield stretch at least).

Compare the videos of 35018 and 46115 on Shap, the 47 is far more active for SG. The comparative summit speeds of 28 and 52mph are also pretty conclusive of significant assistance for Scots Guardsman, whereas I would suggest 28mph is just within BIL's capability.

Thanks for that response. Only asking as a comment on a video from Greenholme thinks SG was working unassisted from the 47 but the speed of the climb was a massive giveaway I thought.

It may well have been a case of when the speed drops below xx then I will call you to assist...

It wasn't that warm on Sunday, it wasn't cold but Mrs GWR4707 kept her coat on all day (although I don't think she was actually very well), TBF WCRC cannot win as whilst it wasn't hot by any means the kids were sweating bullets with the dancing they were doing!

Edit - Oh and top tip, with cold weather, 60's train heating and a carriage of sweaty kids take some baby wipes to keep the windows from steaming up!!

I suspect not as we never seemed to drop to a slow speed during the climb, I only turned my phone on when we getting near the summit to see what we were doing, a completely off the top of my head estimate based on looking out the window would be that we didn't drop below 30 at any stage going up Shap.

Santa Specials are about keeping warm, enjoying a day out .... and Santa. The diesel is to guarantee all the above. Loco performance? It's not about that so good luck to West Coast for cheering up young hearts and a few not so young!

And a few decent images, cropped if necessary, to boot.

And another tip, visit the toilet and get some paper towels, wet in sink and apply soap and apply to windows, you won’t have anymore misting up problems

I never said it wasn’t about a day out . It was just a question about the 47 nothing other than that . I’ve mentioned before it’s all about the kiddies enjoying the Santa experience.

And in the case of my family part of the pleasure for my daughter was coming home and watching the video that a silly bugger like you had got soaked filming so she could see what it all looked like from the outside! :D;)

I can understand that, SG isn't fully 'bedded in' yet after the work that's been done on it, I think 10A are right to give them an easy time for a few weeks, and if giving it a helping hand up Shap is thought prudent............give it a shove.

Load 13 would also put her way over the agreed limits with NR unassisted, and we all know from recent example the chaos that can cause.
