Cheers. Hasn't realised the chronology was that intertwined .... and I still wanna see one in Stroudley livery!

True enough (When's Castel Caernarfon due back in the land of the living?), though I actually had something a bit more 'future proof' in mind.

I drew this out in the late 1990’s. A go everywhere Garrett. The cradle and swivels to FR carriage proportions with like two mountaineer power units and including every modern development I can. The power output would be greater than a NGG 16. Just dreaming.

A 'Big Boy' sized Garratt would have been very long though................

OTOH, a 42% scale model of a Big Boy, to fit 2' gauge track, would be a nice manageable 56 feet long. (Bit longer than an NG16, but still ...)

I think I'd need travel sickness pills to go on that. No chance of ever seeing where you are going.

There are plenty of modern ways of seeing where you're going now.

Are there any statutory safety restrictions regarding loco crews relying on camera/monitor screen (instead of MKI eyeball) ?

So a loco longer than a Garratt with perhaps comparable power, but with massive overhang on curves

Personally I've always fancied doing a bit of NGG16 modification (or butchery, for the unconvinced) to make the front and back a bit more streamlined and attractive, like the later Garratts built for Sierra Leone, Kenya and Australia.

The Kenyan (East African Rly 'Govenor' class 60), the near identical South Australian (class 400) locos and the (final developmemt of the 2'-6" gauge) SLR Garrats were 4-8-2+2-8-4. Both the EAR and South Australian classes were built to be gauge convertible .... not too much use to the WHR tho', as the first were metre guage, convertible to Cape (3'-6"), the second 3'-6" gauge, convertible to std gauge, in actuality, none was ever converted. I'd agree about their styling, which does produce (IMO) the most attractive outline of any Garratt. All three types, are represented in preservation.

So far as tinkering with the NGG16s goes, I'd place function over form, as the performance of the two NGG16A rebuilds (mentioned in an earlier post) merits close consideration. Pity only one of the two Phil Girdlestone rebuilds survives .... and S.Africa is probably a wee bit far to readily arrange any loan.

I was with a walking group that travelled from Snowdon Ranger to Waunfawr, and then walked back, and on another occasion we went from Snowdon Ranger up to Snowdon summit and back down to Rhyd Ddu, a few people took the train back to Snowdon Ranger.

I'm surprised that no-one on this thread has mentioned the Quadraplex Super-Garratt yet!:)
