If we are allowing 43xx / Manor as a single choice, then I think the world is your oyster on the early LCDR! Sondes / Second Sondes class go straight in :)

I'm impressed that its not just a whitewash by express types, I mean there are some been said, but I like there is a lot of love for for mix traffic and freight types as well.

1 Urie s15, had many a great day on one, first engine to lay the blue print of the modern mixed traffic 4-6-0
2 West country / BB in both original and rebuilt form, on a good day with good rail head nothing can touch them, but on a bad day, they can be " interesting"
3 Adams 02, one of my first memories of steam, as a young child, getting off the ferry at Ryde Pier Head, looking through the railings at an engine en route to holiday in Shanklin
4 Br Standard 4 Mogul First engine I fired
5 Maunsel Mogul very capable engines, Southern maid of all work,
6 Urie T 9 again a very capable design that lasted a long time,
7 Br 9 f Just pure brute power
8 A4 just a work of art they look fast standing still.
9 A1 Tornado, because it showed new builds are not just a WIBN and it showed how modern CAD design can improve on a past design, plus it brought a class back from the dead.
10 Austerity Because in the early days of preservation, often it was one of these that was the only motive power available to many railways.

    Well here's my offering in no particular order;
Any Spam Can- because they are what they are.
Duchess- look right and can pull the skin off a rice pudding.
Stanier's 8F - again, looks right and can do what it was designed for.
N/S15s- no fuss, capable and well put together.
LBSC Baltic tank-awsome engine for its time.
Schools - Great design and powerful for its size.
LBSC Terrier - Pleasing to the eye and suprising power for its size.
Drummond's T9 - Well proportioned and a very capable and long lived engine.
LBSC Gladstone - Victorian masterpiece, and again looks right and fulfilled its design criteria.
488 - Most elegant loco ever built!!!

This thread is really interesting. It was very difficult not to plagiarize other peoples' lists. Also, it is interesting to see how various people have interpreted it. I interpreted it as my top 10 period. If it were the top 10 I've experienced or the top 10 most historically influential designs, my list would be very different. For my part, I know nothing of before circa 1880 or so as it just doesn't interest me (it is all beer-barrels on wheels to me) so my latter list would be suspect.

Perhaps top 50 would be easier!

As many other already has mentioned there are so many locomotives to choose between, but I will restrict me to the British ones (I could make a similar list for all other coutries and railway companies in the world I think) Since a big part of my hobby is to make drawings of locomotives I`m mainly focusing of the appearance of the engine(s):)

I have (tried to) single out 2 engines each from the big four companies and 2 from the BR- era.

    In no particular order.

    LNER:
    -A1 "tornado"
    - P2 (with A4 front end)

    Southern Railway:

    -School class (no doubt:))
    -Lord Nelson class

    GWR:
    -The Castle class
    -class 2800xx

    LMS:
    -Rebuilt Royal Scott class
    - The Duchess

    British Railways:

-BR class 8 "Duke of Gloucester"
    -BR class 5 (4-6-0)

    Knut:)

Finding difficult to place in any real order but my top 10 would likely be :

Bulleid Pacific - spam or rebuilt, doesn't matter
    Peppercorn A2
    N15 King Arthur
    Urie/Maunsell S15
    Drummond T9
    Drummond 700 'blackmotor'
    Jubilee
    Standard 4MT 260
    B1
    9F

And I've only realised that's ten and I have no GWR classes many of which I love too.

For me this question would be easier to answer in the negative - name ten I'm less fond of....... :)
