From the diagrams I've seen, it switches to Azuma on the 9th.

The end of an icon on the ECML. I can take or leave anything non steam on the network especially those wretched things out of Paddington where it would be more comfortable to take my own folding chair. But 1200 KGX-INV and 0755 INV-KGX with a HST stands out as memorable especially everything north of Newcastle.

Just out of interest what's happening to this HST set after the tours have finished?

ECS to Craigentinny after it arrives from Leeds on Saturday. Seen elsewhere that it's doing a circular trip from Edinburgh for Craigentinny staff on 28th Dec.

As to what happens to it afterwards , there are plenty of rumours but nothing definite as far as I know.

You would hope after the effort they've gone to there's be some form of preservation.

I strongly suspect it already has a new home lined up, if nothing else it would have been a lot cheaper to vinyl it rather than the full repaint which has been undertaken which I suspect LNER have not funded in its entirety (if at all?).

Might even be planning to keep it themselves, a heritage set to pull out on special occasions for publicity and whatnot.

RTC are running several tours by service train and coach next year. Some of them start with The Highland Chieftain from Kings Cross, but The Shetlander (dates in May and September) starts from Kings Cross "Travelling along the East Coast Main Line aboard the HST 125 train", and The Far North and Orkney (dates in July and August) starts off likewise. Are these just instances of their forgetting to update text from previous tours, or are they chartering a real HST?

If using the Highland Chieftain, then they'll be using Azumas. Whether that's an upgrade or downgrade will be a matter of opinion...

It might be a good idea to lease a few sets to First Great Western. For many decades sea spray was never a problem for the HSTs.

Quote from SW-SWRGen yesterday: ''802.001 1A82 09:15 Penzance to Paddington has failed at Starcross having being hit by a wave at Dawlish''. <BJ>

A real contrast in weather for the tour so far and looks like tomorrow will finish in a grey fashion. It has to be said though for us of a certain age behind the steam guys, this is very nostalgic. I remember seeing a HST set for the first time in 1978 on the ECML. I booed them as they were about to replace my beloved Deltics, but secretly I was very impressed as they stormed along the "golden mile" north of Thirsk screaming past at 125MPH.

Various images from two well known bridges on Wednesday to the rather more grey images from Shipton, Ozendyke and Wakefield Westgate

A sad day. I had my final trip on an LNER 125 a week ago, not on the final workings but one of my regular trains home.

Today, I went out to Grantham station with many others and grabbed some mediocre pictures, including a grab shot of the cab of the lead power car and a rapidly approaching Azuma cab.

Tonight, I saw the ecs back to Craigentinny pass through Grantham, dark except for the lead coach.

Farewell into the darkness, old friend.
