I sometimes feel like I have! But I have added significantly, and not just financially, and not just to a single loco, to railway preservation.

I have a great admiration for the work Carnforth did on 5699. I saw that engine at Barry, still leaning over after the derailment, with her wheels cut through, and remember thinking, "That will never run again." This is one of several occasions when I was proved wrong, so my thanks to the team that achieved what seemed impossible.

But having put in all that work and effort, why didn't they go a bit further and put LMS on the tender and miss off the '4' from the cabside. It's not like it involved any greater effort.

You're the one making the most noise on this particular occasion old chap so expect some incoming. And I know that Tornado isn't a restoration but the livery argument is just as "valid" but obviously not to you as she's one of your pet projects.
I suggest you and your ilk go up to the people who have funded and/or done the hard work in returning a loco to traffic and tell them they've got the livery wrong and get there opinion.

Because the owner obviously wanted it the way it he had it painted? Do the diesel fans berate WCRC for painting their 47s etc. in non BR livery? IMO WCRC is not a museum, it's a TOC and as such can paint its locos any colour it likes. The fact that most of the steam fleet carries authentic livery is a bonus but I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist over the non standard liveries that have adorned 45690 and 45699.

    Exactly this. Well put.

It is unsurprising (to me anyway) that we get such an aggressively antagonistic response.

No one, for clarity, is decrying the excellence of the Galatea rebuild. I used her as an example purely because it was the first to mind for a point, nothing more.

I will leave it at that.

To get this thread back on thread my choices would be:
Steam Restoration - 5699 (regardless of livery applied)
Steam Overhaul - 506 - The amount of work required by the Urie Group to rebuild the frames was immense.
Diesel Restoration - 50026 (regardless of livery applied as 26 never carried revised NSE in BR ownership)
Diesel Overhaul - 50033 The public really got behind this one and combined with the expertise of the guys in the Fifty Fund she looks and sounds fantastic.

Yes I know this is a "steam" thread but my choices of diesels shows that the issues experienced by the steam fraternity are not unique. Livery froth and a coming together for the greater good, and long may it continue.

“You and your ilk”. What a description! My ilk?

Your entitled to hold an opinion, but I do worry about your blood pressure, dear chap.

I don’t believe I have made the most noise in this thread but I am amused at the completely disproportionate response to my comments you have made.

Try and enjoy the rest of the day.

In the meantime I will get back to my painting!

I'll bet the Bluebell are really pleased that you have shared your opinion of their historically inaccurate livery and despite this are fond of it.

I think we could do with a lot more of agreeing to differ on this thread.

Some of us are relaxed about liveries. Some of us get incensed about a livery that is almost authentic (for some previous period of a locomotive's existence) but not quite. Is a not-quite-authentic livery better or worse than an entirely inauthentic one?

If a restoration has been carried out by volunteers, with financial support from other enthusiasts, we may feel that the end result ought to be as authentic as possible, and in this case it very probably will be.

If a restoration has been carried out by a commercial outfit like Carnforth, with little or no support from anyone else, we should be extremely grateful that they have done it at all. We are entitled to say that we would prefer them to have chosen a different livery, but we are not entitled to say that they ought to have done so. That remains true regardless of whether their choice was determined by whim, ignorance, cussedness or a subtle reason that we are unaware of. (I offer no opinion as to which of those applies to a certain Jubilee.)

Would you be OK with the Galatea paint job if it were 'labelled' as 'modern impression of actual historical paint job'? (Just trying to work out exactly what you're most exercised at - the actual paint, or how it's described.)

This livery froth does amuse me. Over on the 60009 thread people are saying that John Cameron can do as he wants with his loco and his wished are paramount. Seems that some of the same people do not allow David Smith the same rights where 45699 is concerned and I do wonder what these people would say if John Cameron announced he was going to repaint 60009 in BR lined black.

No but it would appear from some posts that painting 45699 in maroon was/is a heinous sin.

I actually think the majority of people do agree on here, ie; they agree the owner can do what they want, but sometimes we "wish" they didn't! (Note necessarily paint related?)

Complete tangent, but maybe a good example. As a child I got Hornby Jinty 16440 as my first model railway locomotive and saw the real thing at the MRC. As that child I assumed the livery was authentic. Years passed, decades in fact... and reading somewhere I realised this livery was completely fictitious. How did I feel about that? Pretty disappointed really.

Perhaps you could have volunteered to clean out the ash pit instead rather than leave it to older guys. :)
As for my blood pressure, no need to worry yourself over that.

Oh dear. As a child I got an O gauge Hornby tinplate train set. An 0-4-0 tender loco with the number 60199 on it. How did I feel when I discovered that a) 60199 never existed and b) if it had, it would have been a 4-6-2? Disappointed that I still didn't have my train set.
