It would be interesting to find out what the situation was with Ivatt 2-6-2 tank 41241. This made the short journey from Skipton MPD to Keighley.

Anyone going to have a hissy fit about this major lapse?
    Surely it's appalling?!?!?
People in future decades are going to be misled, and claim this loco had a domed boiler.
Also Alberta with the wrong firebox.
    Heinous crimes!!!!

(Sarcasm, just in case not obvious).

I took my first train journey in 1947 by Southern Electric then LNER to March where my mother's family lived but as a 6 month old so don't remember anything about it, so all I remember was BR steam. Having said that, back in 68 having watched the sad decline of steam and the state of most of the locomotives, the last thing that most of us wanted, irrespective of age, was to remember BR steam, hence Bahamas in incorrect LMS livery and the K4 as 3442 etc. Times have changed and now we look to recreate something of our youth I suppose.

Not all of us. You're right about the anti-BR bias in 1968, but some of us don't forgive that easily.

What's more it was an authentic if short lived livery for 44932. As she ran for about 18 months 1948-9 in that shade of green, as it was one of many different liveries/colour schemes carried by various locomotives as British Railways were looking for a "new" corporate livery for their fleet. Similarly carriage were also turned out in a variety different colours and schemes. The late Derek Cross didn't care for it, but, accepted it as authentic. Though still didn't care for it!

The decisions of that engine's liveries were take by over 600 SMF members, not me. And the first choice was as LMS 2968.

I thought it was coming back with its original number 13268. I didn’t know the membership was so high, even a high profile Mainline runner like 35028 only has around 450.

Yes, John, it is coming back as 13268. It was 2968 from 1991 to 1998, then BR 42968 in its second ticket, 2003 to 2013, and 13268 next. That was the order of preference of the members.

Yes, over 6oo members - it's a long story! But numbers are sadly declining.

I remember it from the time it first entered traffic and did a photo charter on the Valley as 42968. Declining numbers is a problem facing all railways and Loco groups I think.

Sorry, John. I couldn't disagree more. The coat of paint is a uniform. You can change a uniform, and the loco will move perfectly well without it.

Going back to the original question, I'm inclined to answer that there isn't one. There's nothing that springs to mind that has been particularly groundbreaking, anything can be restored now if one has the money and paid staff - 45699 being a good example of that. Perhaps the award should go instead for perseverance, in which case 35006 would be a strong contender.

It will run perfectly well without a lot of things, but they're still part of the restoration.

Some of the disagreement about the importance or otherwise of livery may result from an ambiguity in the subject. "Restoration" could mean restoration as close as possible to the state that a loco was in at some time in its original career (in which case the paintwork is an important aspect) or restoration to working order (in which case the livery is irrelevant, as indeed are constructional aspects such as the chimney).
