    The recent change of chimney from Adams to Drummond profile on the Adams Radial tank caused some fairly trenchant views to be expressed - and that for something that was just a cosmetic, not a functional overhaul!

    Generally speaking, it's the amount of time they can give to a project and the fact that volunteers are usually constrained as well by available finance.. If 45699 were being done by volunteers it probably wouldn't be running yet. For that reason I would say 35006 is a clear winner of the examples discussed.

    I don't agree, yes a team of volunteers work hard for little or no remuneration, but why should a dedicated team that are being paid deserve any fewer plaudits?

    But the end product is the same, I'm not saying that the volunteer teams do not deserve credit, but to dismiss the paid team because they are just that, paid, is unfair, they are just as dedicated.

    Lets look at two hypothetical restorations, all done to excellent quality

    1. Mr Millionaire's contract restoration of a Pacific done over 6 months or so
    2. An all volunteer restoration of an Industrial 0-4-0 that takes many years

    It seems to me that if you are looking for a 'tie breaker' then undoubtedly things like available resources are an important consideration

    OK getting back on track [:rolleyes:]. As I've been pre-empted with 92134, though thankfully she's now running on her first home once preserved the NYMR. I'd like to nominate 2999 Lady of Legend. Would she count though as a retro rebuild of an extinct class, converted from a Barry survivor Maindy Hall?

    Personally I regard Lady of Legend as a conversion of Maindy Hall, obviously all of the criteria of dedication/ability/engineering etc. still apply, the fact of taking one existing locomotive and making it irreversibly resemble one which it never was takes it out of contention as a restoration. This I must stress is My personal opinion

    an interesting point.
    I guess if 4942 was the resulting locomotive but had required new frame sections, wheels, cylinders and cab fabrication in line with a GWR Hall then it's a restoration. As the result is something different, what would we call it since it's not really a new build?

    A rebuild is probably the most accurate, Stats rebuilt to Castles, rebuilt Bulleid pacifics etc.

    But what about those who work on the big railway for a day job, working on loco's A,B and C but then in their spare time but work on loco's X,Y and Z? In some cases between a paid job on a loco and a volunteer job can be slightly blurred. Just look at what Mr Beet does at Carnforth for example.
