    Hmm... so really the W1 needed the improved big-valve cylinders to work properly?

    It wouldn't have mattered what Gresley did with that marine boiler, it would still have been a chronically unreliable heap of junk.

    What happened as well on the east side of the ski slope the driver stopped the 1pm rawtenstall heywood train abruptly near pimhole and was checking the brakes on the carriages i noticed any reason why?

    I would suggest that it wasn't the boiler itself - it served as the works boiler at Stooperdale for many years after being removed from 10000 - but that it wasn't viable for rail service. It was, of course, a marine type boiler. However, nobody knew how it would perform until someone had the idea of actually trying it out in rail use. To me it was a brave 'near miss'. I do wonder, though, if the failure issues rate was partly to do with the materials available at the time - metallurgy has improved dramatically since it was built, as indeed have welding techniques.

    Anyone know of an issue today trains about 30 late, not arrived no news.

    Update running okay full of passengers, problem with other train I gather.

    Apparently 30+ photographers at Ramsbotton sidings this morning, I avoided the crush and went for a sightly more rural shot ...

    With the temperature just rising from freezing, A4 60009 gets the first train of the day across the Irwell river bridge and into Lumb woods already 35 minutes late at this point.
