Bongo, I dont think my comments about the Crab can be thought of as either "sniping", or "heckling". No-one has "heckled" me over my comment, and although suggesting purchase by someone with the funds to move foreward might be seen as an implied criticism of the current owner, then they were certainly not intended as such.
I agree that the Crab is not a "glamour" engine, but a 6P5F power classification is one that would be useful on a Heritage line. Considerably more so than 35011 will ever be to the heritage movement. As ever though, it is up to the owners, and not up to the rest of us to tell then what to do.
My comments about the engine's condition stem from some comment read many years ago when the loco was either still at Barry, or at Dairycoates. A poor firebox was the main issue I recall. But you are right, I "know nothing" compared to the owner, who will know exactly what needs to be done.
As far as being an "armchair type enthusiast", well I do volunteer on one line, am a member of three, and do help in small ways as best I can financially. I sent a donation to the SVR "Flood" fund, and will no doubt send something to the inevitable appeal in 2009 from the North Yorks to fund two vital bridge replacement projects that will soak up around £1 million!

I'll accept your "muddled thinking" comment only to the extent that I agree that there are plenty of groups part-way through lengthy and expensive restorations that could do with our help rather than further diluting effort on another new project. However, if a new group is properly set up with a particular goal in mind, and they have both finance and organisation sorted, then new projects can and will be successful.

    Regards

Where does it say this? All I can find is the entry on the news page which says that it was transported away by road and that this was arranged by the owners. There is no mention of where it is going to.

It "did" say that, but I guess webmaster Stephen has modified his "News" posting if there is doubt about the destination.
I suggest we let it rest and await developments. A Bulleid with a missing coupled wheelset on a low loader will be spotted by someone...eventually!!

  8. Apologies for that. Info was checked beforehand but after publishing I was asked by the owning group to remove certain details from the news item and I was more than happy to carry out that request.

Alberta, you make a statement and add a question mark. You are correct in your assumption, but what relevance does that have to this thread?
My point was that the Crab might be of more use on our heritage lines compared to 35011, because of its size, not its pre-nationalisation lineage.
Now if you know of several B1's hidden away waiting to be restored, then we might be in business....

Well, you need the M4 to get to the M25. Otherwise, its a fair slack and several sharp bends before you get as far as Southampton. Anyway, I take heart from the fact that the 34046 chaps say its in better nick than their loco was prior to restoration.

Mystery solved - 35011 arrived at Sellindge on 18 Dec.

So glad things appear to be happening for the old girl - she was the first MN I ever saw when a young lad, in fact the first Bullied pacific, storming through Raynes Park. What a sight.

See James's post of 9.50pm Wed 17 December. It's probably best not to speculate until the owning group make public their plans for it.

When I was last there, there were a number of engines/bits.

35025: Frames with smokebox, boiler, tender tank and cab.
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141982.html

A Finnish 2-8-0? tender loco. I suspect it is ex-Epping, but I may be wrong. No work taking place, apparently. http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141986.html

A Finnish 0-6-0 tank loco. Has been there for MANY years. No work apparent.
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141972.html

A Thomas Hill Diesel shunter, I believe it was previously at the Rother Valley Railway.
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141985.html

    J94 68078, under active restoration.
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141961.html

Austerity tank "Norman", owned by SLL. I couldn't get a pic of it on my last visit, as it is in the SLL "resuscitation tent". Apparently, she isn't far off completion.

The boiler for a TKH loco, nothing seems to be happening on her.
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141978.html

A snowplough, presumably bought to donate tender frames..
    http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141983.html

There is also a Mk1 brake coach, ex Balfour Beatty, the bodies of two pre-grouping coaches, an SECR PMV and A Bulleid double decker driving unit. http://jonedwards.photobook.org.uk/p51141963.html

I must emphasise one thing, though. To the best of my knowledge Sellindge is a PRIVATE site. I was allowed access due to my friendship with a member of SLL, but the site is maintained with the goodwill of the owner. People turning up unexpected could, and I put it no higher than that, put a strain on that goodwill. If you are desperate to see the site, may I suggest you contact SLL via their own website, http://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/index.php. They are a notoriously friendly bunch!
