    Tom, I appreciate you have 2 seperate entries in @Victor 's book but you run the risk of opening a seperate book in East Anglia! 1501 is something that the GW did in a chance to catch up!:p:)

    To be fair, they were a good tool for a lot of other things as well. It was just those bloody great coil springs either side of the footplate which got in the way swinging the shovel!

    Must admit I've never had issues with them but then I've only ever done it at 25 mph. The 15s certainly side stepped the issue with the "Zebedees" (and 7714s did actually, like Zebedee himself, go "boing" owing to a damaged guard)

    Its no coincidence that 7752, 9600 & 9466 are the only 0-6-0 tank locos which still venture out onto Network rail from time to time. No others of that size/type come close...….

    I wouldn't mind seeing what 1501 could do up Old Hill Bank. I say this so many times but it's the the most unwestern western engine of the lot.

    Possibly, but there could be other factors, such as the owners' desires to see their engine so used, and their willingness to pay for all the necessary examinations and fitment of mandatory equipment.

    Suitability is the biggest consideration. I can't think of any others which would be suitable on the modern NR network.

    I think you need to define 'suitable' here. Suitable for what? I have a vision of a 57XX storming the South Devon Banks with nine bogies on the drawbar, but it just doesn't work. The route, load and timings need to be suited to the locos, and I suggest that it would be just as possible to do this for similar locos from the other three Big Four companies - if the owner of one chose to make it available.

    I've already said that the panniers were good machines, but let's not get carried away by say they're the only good machines.
