Fantastic! Another ex-Barry really useful locomotive nearly ready to do its bit. Many thanks for posting the photos. It's always good to see progress like this on our heritage lines. I've always thought that the Standard 4 2-6-4Ts were made for some of our heritage lines just like the 82xxxs will be! I must admit that the boiler does look really huge again once fitted back on the locomotive!

The tanks are outside on a wagon awaiting fitting by the way and it is good to see the boiler in the frames after only ever seeing her without a boiler.

Heres hoping for a SSS2 appearance.

Still a long way off yet despite a great deal of preparation before the boiler went away. Many people see the boiler back in the frames as the final stage, but don't underestimate the effort still required by the Groups dedicated team!! Fitting the cladding, cab and remaining pipework cannot be rushed if the job is to be a good 'un.

Best wishes to Pete and the team - 2009 will be a great year!

Due to the boiler being slightly too short!!!! LNWR engineers have been at Llangollen this week putting a few things right.

As hjparker states, it is still a long way off. The boiler will have to come out of the frames again for fitting of the ashpan and rocking grate gear...

And there is still some of that dreaded pipework to make.... #-o

My mind is boggling at the solution! The only thing I can think of is Viagra and I'm fairly sure it won't work!

It sounds awfully bad. But it isnt. It was only about 1/2 of an inch short where the smokebox bolts on to the barrel. it has been rectified now though!

I didn't know that here in the UK it was possible any longer to make a new boiler barrel of this size. I know that in the great scheme of things the Brighton Tank's boiler is of a pretty moderate size but still I really didn't think it could be done here in the 21st century. Excellent news. =D> =D> =D>

I dont thinks its a case of "we cant build new boilers/boiler barrels in the UK "

Its more of a case of how deep is your pocket ?

I thought replacing boiler barrel plate was becoming more frequent nowadays. The SVR replaced the front section of 43106 I believe, and there have been others where at least inserts have been welded in to barrels.
Cost-wise, boiler barrel is probably not as expensive as new fireboxes that are being built now. New inner box on a Black 5 ( 45428?)on the NYMR, and isn't there a new box for a Bulleid in course of construction? ( 34101?)

The replacement of complete barrel rings of rivetted or welded construction is now common-place beit conical or parallel section, we have replaced literally dozens in the works to date, as part of contract boiler overhauls.

As Ian says, rolling barrels is dead easy. It doesn't take long and there are umpteen firms out there that can and will do it. Just think about all the different bits of engineering plant and equipment that require large diameter and reasonably thick walled tubes. It gets a bit harder when you require a conical shaped barrel, but not much. The harder bits of our traditional boilers are the flanging of the plates, especially the throat plate and backplate. There aren't many places with the capability of doing this. Then, if you want it riveting, this is a skill that is very much in decline in general industry. Very few companies outside the Heritage sector can and will do it. Besides the cost, industrial injuries, such as deafness and vibration white finger have speeded up its decline.

Err, other than 80072, what locos have had the taper barrel section replaced?
    Loco numbers would be appreciated.

Didn't 5552 at Bodmin have most of its boiler replaced?

I'm really most impressed that the Langollen Railway has this capability. Is there a limit on the size of boiler, could for example a boiler for a Class 8 loco be produced at Llangollen?

I would wish to emphasise that I'm not wanting to stir a controversy here, bearing in mind that 'Tornado's boiler was made in Germany, so please don't take this the wrong way.

That boiler was actually overhauled by LNWR at Crewe, not at Llangollen.

The boiler barrel was not rolled at crewe just drilled and fitted

Not wishing to reveal customer confidentiality, it can however be said, that rolling a taper boiler section is very simple, once the development has been drawn out, and the boiler-plate profiled to suit. All you need then is a set of pyramid rolls capable of rolling the plate... \:D/
