Thanks for the info matt, so it sounds like bridge 10 is the most difficult and costly.

Crazy there is 7 bridges between dan y coed and llampumsaint presumably to broad gauge spec too? Did the line have a good route availability in br days?

Blue route was designated, this allowed 43xx’s and Manors to work the line. The 28xx locos were tried during the war but fell foul of some structures, marks allegedly still present at Conwil platform....

The loco announcement will be up on the railway’s Facebook page at 10am tomorrow (no subscription required). It’s taken a short while to get things confirmed but worth the wait....

We are delighted to announce that GWR Pannier Tank L92 (5786) will be joining us from March until mid-July courtesy of the South Devon Railway.

L92 was built in 1930 and spent most of her working life in South Wales before moving to London in 1958 and then worked on the London Underground until 1970, when she entered preservation. She is now owned by the Worcester Locomotive Society and is currently painted in London Transport colours.

L92 is one of several Great Western Railway pannier tanks in preservation; as immortalised by “Duck” in the Rev. Awdry’s “Thomas the Tank Engine” series. She is the third ex-London Transport pannier to visit the railway after 7752 (1988) and 5764 (2006).

L92 will be making her first visit to Wales for 62 years and we look forward to seeing and hearing her working trains up the Gwili Valley. Her first day in service will be on St David’s Day, March 1st, on the Sunday diner. She is booked to work many of the service trains during her stay, subject to availability. When not in use she will be making use of the newly commissioned engine shed at Bronwydd.

It’s been an exciting start to the year at the Gwili Railway and we now have even more to look forward to with the season ahead! Many thanks to both the Worcester Locomotive Society and the South Devon Railway for their kind assistance in agreeing to the hire.

Any particular reason for going blue?

Going blue? Has it ever been painted anything else from the day it was built?

yes, she was painted black in industry (at least initially) but has worn blue certainly since last preservation overhaul in 2010.

I can't disagree positively but I have my doubts that it was painted black. It was certainly blue in the 1960's when I first knew it. That was the standard colour for NCB locos on the Backworth system (https://www.flickr.com/photos/60790501@N04/5684952016) and, being a 1955 built loco it is less likely to have been any other colour. Preserved British Steam Locomotives also supports the claim it was originally blue ( https://preservedbritishsteamlocomo...thorn-works-no-7849-no-47-moorbarrow-0-6-0st/) It was certainly blue when it entered preservation. and, AFAIK it has not carried any colour other than blue since, albeit of different shades, which is why I have suggested that it has always been blue.

What colour do you think it is in the penultimate two photos on the link you gave (the two photos by "Sassaby61022" from 1969 and 1971)? I could be persuaded that was black, but I think I could be persuaded of just about any other colour darker than improved engine green, to be honest!

Could those pictures pass muster as "Improved Engine Blue"?!

I reckon the first one is definitely blue, if dirty, and I can't see the loco being repainted for the second. What I can't get to terms with is that, on my visits to the Backworth system, the locos were generally clean.
This was the loco soon after purchase for preservation and after being cleaned up. The NCB plant no. and emblem are still on the loco, as shown on the photo in 1967. The nameplate is simply hung on the handrail. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lauriemulrine/8364399252

We have done some research and believe it was black when delivered new and repainted blue in approx. 1967. Some evidence remained of the original livery when we were stripping the paint. The black is similar to RSH 7763 (Tanfield).

the present paint scheme being applied is “regal blue”.

The "Preserved British Steam" reference states that it was steamed once on the NYMR, but I'm pretty sure that it never did - afaik it arrived with a big hole in its firebox!

Some good coverage in this month’s steam railway with respect to the Carriage Shed and the Inside Track feature.
