Very Busy day down the line today , started with replacing Darley down distants lense, then Andrew and myself swapped over a damaged wire on the down platform for the train ready to start circuit and bell, in the end running a new cable out all the way and we’ve still to fit a disbox off the up platform in place of a joint yet, also dropped the people fencing into Rowsley box but haven’t screwed it on yet as we’re currently sanding and painting inside

We also dig out the concrete foot on one of the up platform posts where the wind had took out a few of the posts and put some repair posts in for now

Spotted the Ashover gang ballasting their new track formation and also had a quick call in on the LMSCA who are hard on removing panelling and doors off the medical coach to restore that to original condition.

Lastly called in at Church Lane to say hello to Ray one of our new signallers (though I’ve known Ray years as a Network Rail signaller local to me) so there’s nowt like retirement

The carpark At Rowsley was overflowing and so were the trains which is LwYs good, lastly to you all a Happy Christmas folks, all the best and see you soon

Having seen some Youtube videos that were railway related, I recall having a taped off the TV documentary on Peak Rail back in the 90's. I recall SNG being in it a lot of it and a lot of discussion of expansion plans. I am however, totally blanking on what it was called if anyone remembers?

Are you sure it was SNG? There was much huffing and puffing about Flying Scotsman a few years ago during the Marchington era.

Could swear it was but this was at least 15 years since I last saw it. I remember it having some intense music as well.

regarding replacement spare bearings for ordering I can get on and order two now

Deborah and Peter spent the day checking over the exchanges and telephones to all the boxes and fixed the down darley platform phone faults while there, one of which was a disconnection on a terminal inside and the box end phones bell had mossed itself up.

We finished off our departments day with some tidying up of the Bolt boxes and stuff in Rowsley box back to the store , got rid of all the scrap wood into a pile for the Loco shed and a clean down of the upstairs and some loose paintwork prior to it getting a good repaint internally later in the month, the relay cabinet and midland locker have been put back together and I need to locate some bolts to hold the locker backboard on plus some bolts for the relay cupboard , but that end of the box is ready for its repaint .

Elsewhere quite a bit was going on , D8 was having some air tank work in her nose end done, the class 37 was running up to test a few things and the RMB in the shed has now started to have its north end steelwork welded back in after the rusted toilet end metalwork has finally been removed , not a small job at any length.

The Ashover light railway gang were doing some trackwork and also fitting a buffer stop they’ve made up, the Heritage Shunters trust had 08016 out to charge up the batts and other jobs and managed to bump into Kev and dave and chat about other Loco related works, finally I called in on Ben and Harvey who were showing me some of the woodwork they’ve been u see taking on the medical staff coach in the LMSCA

    Il be back down hopefully
Monday 13th as on lates for the next seven days, work wise continuing at Rowsley box inside but also another lense to replace will be the riverside distants yellow as I noted it scumbled the other day on a walk with the family, one of the problems of having a line facing east into the sun constantly I also spotted a tree trunk up another tree trunk from the floods too, pic attached

An unusual view of Peak D8. RMB SC1835 has had its new panels welded on, however this is probably the least of its woes, the corrosion especially at the toilet end is horrendous - but we press on...

Andrew has cleaned down one wall at the site entrance end of the cabin which was quite heavy in loose old paint and we’ve tidied up the rear wall above the stairs and repainted most of the inside of the cabin again, there’s still the end wall to finish and around the front window, Rod has been making fittings for the LMSR stove and it’s chimney to finish those off, amongst other things.

We also managed to remove the old power cable at Church lane and it’s piping across track which has now been replaced and we’ve done a swap with an old AWS magnet which we acquired from Gosberton that we neither need or have all the parts for but have a colleague that does needs one and that’s paid for all the paint for various things this year and we are continually getting all the telecomms store bits slowly sorted together, I’ve ordered the spare bearings for darley dale gates and am awaiting their delivery now.

Apart from finishing off the painting work our next job this coming month with trains not running is to swap the BR arm on church lane 6 signal back to the donated MR lower quadrant arm ex Derby station which David restored, firstly getting the old spindle and nuts loosened off so we can get the arm off easily, as we did with number 13 signal.

Elsewhere I noted the class 37 and Penyghent are having maintenance and work done now we’re not running.

I managed to call in on the Loco shed, work on the boiler and firebox of the 2-8-0 continues now all the tubes are out, the bunker is also off its frames for work as well.

The permanent way are out and about later this month with the lineside works train 26th january, 2nd&9th february which is planned to be worked by the Heritage Shunters Trust class 08 so should be quite photogenic down the straight bit towards Matlock.

I can attest to the amount of work Dave mentions here. It’s took a long time to get down to some good metal to start rebuilding the body up again but finally the new steelwork is going back in again. keep Up the good work folks

Regarding the work on the carriage, here’s two shots of some of the bits removed (polite term for powdered iron) and the big hole that’s slowly being refilled in just one side on one end 79E04E51-EDAE-455C-801C-E7AEE7BEF514.jpeg 61F51E8B-9AF0-4BDD-BF86-2D7BC3FEB1F5.jpeg

Bitterly cold day today at minus five down the railway, the class 37 was fired up and running around Rowsley for a private event, some photos attached and she does look nice.

the HST gang were about but didn’t get a chance to check On them or Mr Briddon up at Darley Dale. My own department carried on with emptying the Rowsley box out for decorating and making some display items up before heading upto Church Lane to work on 6 signal

I’ve added a couple of photos of the Ashover Light Railway groups track layout which they’ve been relaying at Rowsley, the new siding point is laid through the foundations of the old coaling plant.

Lastly the 2-8-0 (hopefully got it right/counted the wheels joke aside) is down to her frames to have a good check and work done on her bunker so I’ve included a photo of her too.

5553 has been reunited with her wheel sets and the 2-8-0 has had her wheel sets removed to work on them and her chassis , more box work has been undertaken and welding back good bits of metal into the RMBs ends continues with the carriage gang.

The first episode of series 2 of the Channel 5 programme Walking Britain's Lost Railways is this Sunday at 8pm featuring Derbyshire. Previous episodes have taken a more intelligent approach than some railway programmes so should be interesting.

It was a channel 4 documentary called “All steamed up” with 92203 on the railway and showing the army sappers clearing the Rowsley site and discovering the pit. Also featured the East lancs and the Welsh Highland scheme before it was rebuilt. I have it on VHS, if I recall it was from 1997.

A couple of pictures taken by my brother Dave P of the old Peak Rail platform at Buxton during the recent clean up. We both put many hours in to the site all those years ago and had lots of fun times. DSCF1944.JPG DSCF1942.JPG

It’s very early days yet but with the regeneration of Buxton’s main hotel (several Million pounds spent upon it) and both Buxton water getting in on that and the local authorities wanting to regenerate Buxton it is envisaged a small returned operation to the part of the site still there. I’d surmise more of a tidy up of the site and basic facilities (platform shelter or structure)to start with as used to be there and a simple display of stock , it only had a 300yard running line back then and the shed area is gone so it’d be very basic but allow a return.
You could reuse the platform in situ to save costs and the siding where the restaurant used to be against what the bus station was (now Aldi) would allow some storage or a parcel van or two as your useful display carriages/small shop or cafe

there are some plans but it’s early days yet. Soon as we know more il let you know
