Ah strange - ‘cos I had it stretching from Bristol in the west to London in the east - and everywhere beyond that is classed as the north! It does suggest there’s a heck of a lot in the middle neither side wants! ;)

Sorry, my mistake, but at least it has caused some amusement.

My view is a bit like the one Tom holds, except that Banbury, Willesden and Temple Mills were the border points. Southern crews didn't work any further north!

    Cheers, Neil

Well, quite. Spare paths are becoming fewer and fewer at many 'choke points' across the network, and Leeds station is definitely one of them...

Uh oh! Are they not running back to back on the set this year... I thought it was changed to avoid 45mph on ECML. Last years trip only managed Bedale!

I was on that tour and wasn't the issue being the 8Fs 50mph limit

The issue was that the 8F led the tour backwards at 45mph including the need to get the tour off the branch, across the down mainline and then onto the up slow at Northallerton. It had to be in place by then. Running back to back with two Jubilees would make life a lot easier to path it as the speed restriction for tender running wouldn't apply and I'm still sure NR don't like tender first on this area between Darlington and York.

Tender first operation dictates 45mph running regardless of 8F or Jubilee

Only if the leading loco is TF. With a loco at each end, facing in opposite directions, the train can run at the slowest loco's forward speed. A Jubilee at each end should allow the train to work at up to 75 mph. The problems occur when a tender is the thing leading a train across facing points and such like.

So it all depends what the Westmorland Gazette means by double headed. I suspect it is loose language for back to back with a runaround at Holgate.

Assuming both locos work out of Carnforth chimney first, then one loco will be end up running tender first at some point. If they’re both somehow in a situation running chimney first at either end of the train on the T&T sections, then the limit would be 60mph, not the maximum capable of the lead loco.

Thread drift though, is it worth these posts being moved to the appropriate thread?
