You might think that; I might think that; others might think that. However, those responsible obviously don't

When were you last at the Moors/Pickering? I ask as fishing lake has long since been filled in and converted to an overflow car park and the owners are installing a number of box vans for glamping [as well as an area for camping I believe]. As for the Trout farm it hasn't been "farming for some time. The Trout ponds are still there but pretty well derelict, on the road side of the line.

The fish farm ponds are on the opposite side of the track to the new site. The former big fish pond where the public could fish has been filled in and is now a car park - its the large grey oval road opposite the castle in that screengrab.

Perhaps you should read the conditions that were laid down by the planning authority before criticising the NYMR ?

So basically, they're going to construct a roof and not a shed?

On another note, the concrete deck of bridge 27 was poured yesterday - a few days for it to cure and the job of reinstating the track and signalling can get underway whilst the attention of the bridge gang moves to bridge 8 at Pickering.

As I understand, the mainline is over to the right of the Long Siding (LS), and that the LS itself will extend northwards through the carriage shed before joining the mainline through a new set of points. The existing LS will become truncated at the new set of points, being lifted northwards. The carriage shed will be some half way between Pickering station and New Bridge (NB). NB is the p-way depot but also houses the pit compound itself positioned between the p-way workshop and mainline.

I have read the conditions on several occasions. The original scheme submitted by the NYMR in November 2017 had open sides ; it wasn't a planning condition. Some of the excuses made at the time were a bit pathetic. e.g. guards can't be relied upon to open the doors before shunting into the building. Yes, that was stated. If open sides are a necessary condition, how come the workshops has sold walls?

Ah, another railway that thinks guards will be flummoxed by a carriage shed!

To be fair, I've known guards that can be flummoxed by the instruction that flags should be waved above the head ... ;)

The Swanage railway's new carriage shed is also to be open at both ends and have half sides on one side. Must be an architect fad...

I've known the odd loco crew who almost seemed to think a whistle was quite sufficient and wasn't too fussed about a flag at all! :p

Let's just say all train crew, at either end, are united by a common enemy - the signalmen ... :)

to be fair and having looked at a few carriage sheds with the intention of planning our own, doors at either end seems like a very sensible idea. Prevention better than cure?

I've seen quite a few guards holding their green flag steady above their head, which is not as described in the Rulebook.

Several KESR signalmen are also guards. One or two are footplatemen.

Indeed, not uncommon our way either. I know loco crew who are signalmen; and others who are guards. But we digress...

I think you misunderstand. The Swanage shed is to be open at either end, ie no doors or end gables. Also, with one wall only being at half height and and no ends, can it really be regarded as secure? The shed is intended for storing the bulleid and maunsell carriages, I can't help feeling that the shed is perhaps not the best solution to protect these vehicles.
