In some circumstances our Rulebook says a green handsignal should be held steady, in another it should be waved above the head and in one former case it used to be waved slowly from side to side. They are different signals, all of which happen to involve a green flag. (The guard's signal that station duties are complete [the 'right away'] is odd in that by day the flag is waved, but at night the lamp is held steady)

Similarly there can be quite a difference between displaying a red flag held steadily, and waving a red flag.

ah I see, yes I suppose the theory is that a roof on stilts is better than pure open air storage and will keep some weather off but it’s clearly not as good as a secure carriage shed.

I think it depends upon what you are trying to protect from.

A fully secure shed to keep out unwelcome visitors, needing fire precautions, alarms and so on, would presumably cost more.

If all you are looking for is reducing deterioration due to weather, then a shelter is all that is needed. That means a roof, and a wall to protect from the prevailing winds.

If you want to work on stock in the building then the requirements will be higher.

The so called carriage shed at KESR was actually intended as a shelter from the weather, in order to extend the interval between repairs and repaints. As such it was designed with walls which do not reach the ground in order to allow adequate ventilation. Even so it was found that condensation was more than expected and for a while the doors were having to be left open. I believe the roof has since been lined in some way to reduce this and enable the doors to be kept closed. The ventilation gap below the side walls is filled with a wire mesh to try to minimise bird or animal entry.

Well the RSSB rule book for train dispatch on the Network is not so prescriptive - it says that the guard gives the "ready-to-start" signal to the driver by "displaying" a green hand signal. How you do that is not specified.

Designing for the prevention of condensation obviously requires careful thought. I know that a decommissioned nuclear power station was fitted with roof vents to encourage air circulation and this did dry out the internal structures.

Compromise application after negotiation, bear in mind the strong concerns that the EA expressed which of course impacted the planners consideration.

Here goes folks another [admittedly short] feature on the replacement of bridge 27. It's just over a minute long and shows the latest work.

I think that there is a little bit of track slewing needed.

Out of interest, which vehicle is being converted into a wheelchair friendly diner - and is there any reports of progress/updates?

I haven't heard of any vehicle being converted to a wheelchair-friendly diner, but I suppose that the BG already converted to a disabled coach could be further modified for this role as it should no longer be required on regular services.

''Buy a virtual Steam Locomotive £100. You would be purchasing this to support the railway and to ensure it can survive during these troubled times''.

You could of course have Googled it the same as I did. ;) <BJ>

I would rather experience the ride for real behind a steam loco but in these uncertain social distancing rules and lockdown with covid 19 its not physically possible anywhere at present unless the U.K. goverment deem the coronavirus pandemic safe to have public gatherings in future how long when who knows. But im happy to donate money anyhow to keep the N.Y.M.R. afloat so they can commence again soon running steam trains to whitby.

It’s good to have wheelchairs in more than just a normal carriage as they can eat too now. I had an idea once that a hole goods train could get seats in it as a different way to go down the line and wheelchairs could go on that easily
