Yes, and I think railways should start to consider cancelling special events.

What likelihood is there that railways will be able to claim for events that they've had to cancel, given that although the government is in effect advising against it, so far they haven't explicitly banned such gatherings?

A very good question, and I imagine will depend heavily on the precise contracts and policies they've got.

I'm reconsidering my attendance at the SVR gala, not for the event itself necessarily but for the likes of service stations and the hotel involved which adds risk. Not planning on changing my attendance at the Bluebell event a couple of weeks earlier as frankly it's not far away and I don't think there's much of a risk in being outside at such an event.

Given this evening's advice I'd suggest it's unlikely that either event will happen.

How many have policies in the first instance for business interruption? Would be (pleasantly) surprised if many did.

Presumably the restrictions on non-essential social gatherings mean the cancellation of all rail tours for the foreseeable future?

Saphos have now (16th) cancelled all trains until 10 May:

    https://saphostrains.com/

I also think heritage railways will have to stop running completely.

Apart from the public health advice in practice there will be no customers anyway.

    Grim times.

Mods - please can you change the title of this thread to include railtours?

I’m sure I read yesterday in the mountain of information and waffle that COVID-19 is a specified disease.
I bet preserved railways across the land are having frantic conversations with their insurance brokers as to whether their Business Interruption Insurance covers them for all risks including new viruses.

So GWSR have cancelled the Cotswold Steam Festival and some mainline operators (Vintage and Saphos) have suspended their operations. It would be the sensible thing now for all other railways and tour operators to follow.

If the government are advising against unnecessary travel and social contact then I can't see that steam galas and railtours should be exempt. I like the way that they are not being too heavy handed at this stage saying it is advice rather than the state of "lockdown" that some European countries have imposed. The problem is however that if large numbers of people do not heed the advice then tougher measures may have to be taken. I do not want to see the situation that my wife's family in Italy have where they even need to fill in a form to allow them to go out to the shops! Hopefully if everyone is sensible about this we can get through this without draconian measures.

Business interruption insurance only clocks in when an event is cancelled because of something beyond the organiser’s control. The government has only advised not made it mandatory to cancel so there will be no cover.

As the SVR has suspended services for the next two weeks, I would agree with the sentiment.

I have a sense that the questionnaire at the top of this thread may already be redundant. Even if folk still intend to attend, the likelihood is that it won't be happening anyway this side of the autumn?

Indeed, I don't think anyone will have a choice. By the time galas are being held again and we do have a choice, it'll probably be academic as it'll all have blown over.
