From the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways website:

    March 18th - 10.40 am

The momentum for dramatic lock-down to contain the virus has built up since the government’s announcement on Monday. This took us a little by surprise as we expected this later in the week rather than earlier. An online meeting of the Company Board had been arranged for this evening to discuss our plans going forward, depending on follow-on announcements and the various options determined by possible changes in government advice and guidelines.

However, rather than delay until after the meeting, it has been decided to cancel our train services with immediate effect.

Further announcements on our future plans, as well as updates on access to our shops and cafés, will be made on our website / social media at the earliest opportunity.

Lots of lines shutting and sensibly so. I'm interested to know (a very general view) as to what the situation is with non direct operational volunteers etc though - for instance those working on restorations or infrastructure projects. Are railways encouraging this activity to stop, or leaving it to the individuals to decide in line with recommendations?

GWSR - turn up if you want to. C&W was about 25-30% normal attendance today. P-Way had a few in. (See Blog http://haylesabbeyhalt.blogspot.com/2020/03/tumbleweed.html).

Why be miserable at home when you can be miserable doing something useful?

From what I've seen so far, the latter. There seems little need to tell lineside clearance to not turn up for example, and even large workshops ought to be fine as long as there's not too many in and you're careful. It's also somewhere you're unlikely to be touching your face or food without washing your hands anyway.

And as the SRPS Railtours Commercial director I have done this today!

    * IMPORTANT INFORMATION *

It is with regret that in light of the Covid-19 pandemic we will not be operating the following planned planned railtours

2nd May Dunfermline Town to Glenfinnan
30th May from Dunbar to Dunrobin Castle

At this stage in time we still plan to operate our programme from the 20th June but we will be regularly reviewing this during the Covid-19 pandemic period.

We are all highly disappointed having to take this decision but our primary concern is to protect our volunteers, staff and visitors.

We are hoping that anyone that's already booked for tours can be transferred to tours later on in the year but if not, we will be offering refunds.

Customers who have pre-booked with us for Railtours will be contacted individually by email or phone. We are a very small team and ask that you are patient with us whilst we do this.

Anyone requiring further information please email us at railtours@srps.org.uk where possible.

    Commercial Manager

I would imagine that our excellent team of vegetation removers at Llangollen will carry on the Winter's work, and will probably be able to do a lot of the removals planned for next Winter.
We also have a couple of volunteer-led jobs in the carriage works.
The new station at Corwen will hopefully progress towards completion during our enforced closure.

    Bob.

Subject to nesting I presume (birds, not the vegetation removers)

Cambrian Heritage Railways have cancelled all planned events and services in April. Our running season normally starts from Easter. The situation will be reviewed in line with government advice, it is very possible that cancellation of services continues after April.
