    Hello,

I have rescued a couple of what I believe are BR (E) crossing lamps from certain oblivion in a skip!

They don't have any of the innards (no burner etc) so my intention is to cosmetically restore and make a removable LED unit to go in for display.

Luckily- there is a spare bullseye lens in the one that is damaged!

Can anyone tell me how these lenses are fitted- or give me any pointers on restoration?

My plan is to use wire wheels on a drill or grinder- rust converter- primer then paint- they appear to have been black from the traces of remaining paint on them?

    Best Regards

    Chris

It is a good many years since I had to place a lamp in one of these but I think the bullseyes and lenses were secured with putty or some similar compound.

You can occasionally find the oil burners on eBay but they are scarce.

Putty is used on the ones I have seen.

For info. I think you may have signal lamps, especially as one of them appears to have a sunshade. A crossing lamp usually has a red bullseye (or Fresnel) lens on both sides. . The attached photo from the Lamp Manufacturing and Railway Supplies shows in the right hand what type of interior is required for both. There should also be a tin, removable anti draught base inside it too, but often lost.

One corner of the inner lamp was rounded so that when you placed it in the outer case it was always correctly orientated.
