Last question in P2 section----Or perhaps Would you have rebuilt the P2s in the circumstances of 1942? From limited reading, the answer to that is not tremendously controversial is it?

60113--- but a reputation for being unloved? Many transfers between sheds --a bit unusual on the LNER?

And we're done! I tried to spread it out a bit better than yesterday.

Thanks to everyone for bearing with me whilst I have been posting this the last two days. I hope there's some things of interest in there. If you have any questions - do let me know and lets discuss them further.

Best wishes, stay safe, and speak soon,

    Simon

I’m aware you’re being sarcastic but still, glad to have given the general public a service this evening in rendering you so.

    Hahaha!

I haven't had a chance to look at your presentation yet Simon, but is there much in there that wasn't on your excellent podcast a little while ago? I really enjoyed that, even though I had it on whilst doing some modelling so only properly listened to half of it. Just means I'll have to put it on again. :)

Basically the lecture shows the actual material I’ve been working from a lot better.

Visual aids do help enormously for getting points across, and in the case of the board minutes, show they exist and what numbers to look for when checking.

    Very clear argumentation.
The numerical row 3 20 4 91 slides ,showing how much he hated Gressley, is a piece of art.
Enjoyed it and will burn my Cox,Nock and Rogers books.

Can I ask a question please?
For me, one of the aesthetic challenges of Thompson's pacifics is that great long smokebox. It really is not a happy look. I understand that a bit of space between steam pipes, blast pipes, petticoats, superheater headers etc might have been advantageous, and it is in contrast to Gresley's very neat and pretty design. This long smokebox was characteristic of Peppercorn pacifics as well, but what was the purpose. What was in there?
When A1's (A10s) were rebuilt to A3 and fitted with double kylchap exhaust, the smokebox design appears unchanged, so it can't be the exhaust design dictating the smokebox length. So, why?

I wonder if it is just about smoke box capacity - in principal, the longer the smoke box, the longer a loco can run before the ash builds up above the lowest row of tubes and starts to have an adverse impact on steaming. That would have been a growing issue as coal quality declined - similar argument to the need for large ash pan volume, and why post war Pacifics were preferred for jobs that pre-war could be done by 4-6-0s.

Class B16 was one of the "non-standard, to be maintained" classes and as such was more likely to be working alongside the B1s and similar. They were modernized into B16/3.
