Especially that there is almost nothing, except money that stands in the way of restoring anything,, even down to the point that what you end up with is virtually a new build vehicle.

If someone were to donate a part from one of the scrapped 02's and a new engine built around that part, is it classed as a restoration, or a new build, for instance is say a part off 18 Ningwood was donated, and a new engine constructed, the engine could still be said to be that engine, even if it was just a water filler and some back head fittings.

Very true. I was wondering, t'other day, about the relative merits of the terms "restored" and "rebuilt" with reference to rolling stock. On the Isle of Man, 'H' and 'M' series open wagons (and some day soon) a 'G' series van* utilise original ironmongery alonside replacement timbers, as do several Corris waggons. On the IWSR, ex-IWR Carriage No.10's bodywork is certainly a restoration (and a most magnificent one at that!), featuring a novel laminated wooden mainframe.

Though some will doutless hold other views my own conclusion is, that as long as no deception is intended, it doesn't much matter ... if it means we get to see these vintage designs running.

*I'm pretty sure the IOMSRSA folks won't mind a gratuitous plug for the appeal fund to return G1 to traffic. Here's the relevant url: http://www.iomsrsa.org/projects/goods-van-g1#appeal

Yes, does anyone know its history? , it must have come off an Island engine at some point but I wonder, if there was a new built 02, Would the IOWSR number it as a continuation of the Island numbers, or would they number it as a long lost member of the class?

Thank you Gary, that's very interesting, I remember reading, or maybe hearing from someone at the railway that the bogie was spare at St Johns, and purchased when the loco works closed, or was it saved from the scrap man, after 31 had been cut, So , Who knows, one day you might very well see a reconstructed W31 , what would a new build 02 Cost ?

Didn't I read in one of the comics last year, that IOWSR had possession of the regulator handles of ALL the Island O2s? What a possibility! :D

That's ready for when the production line re starts, when SWR tell the gov we can't afford the island franchise and a computer glitch identifies the IOWSR as operator of last resort and Haven streets accountants suddenly find an extra 30 million in their bank account and running rights between Ryde and Shanklin. and a terrier and the push/pull set some how find themselves pressed into service .
