The Dartmouth Steam Railway or whatever it's called this week has a somewhat cavalier attitude towards authentic portrayal of their locomotives and rolling stock generally. Not criticising it, they have their reasons, and that's fine. They think the "ordinary punter" prefers a locomotive with a name, and all the fancy lining out and crest regalia, regardless of whether a loco ought to have it or not.
Lydham Manor has always been called Lydham Manor. In Great Western days Manors were painted green, but with no lining. In BR days they were painted black, and for a period of time, also lined out. As it happens, Lydham Manor was built in BR days so never saw GWR green, lined or otherwise.
5239 never carried a name in "real" days, Goliath is a name the DSR have made up for it. In GWR days it would have been green but with no lining or crest, and in BR days it would have been black with a crest but no lining.
In 4555's case they've obviously decided that a name isn't so important over all, but they still like all the nice snazzy lining and crest, even though it too should be plain green with "GREAT WESTERN" or "GWR" lettering. And to be fair, objectively, it does look extremely smart like that, even though it's wrong.

Lydham Manor is correct Goliath on a freight engine that never had a name is silly. The GWR livery is correct as the pre 1928 style but not with the crest

Manors were BR lined green after 1957. The GW livery 1934 - 1946 was the ‘shirt button’ monogram, lined for express passenger locos, unlined for lesser types. Post 1946 it was G Crest W and GWR respectively, still lined and unlined. The crest incorrectly carried by 4555 is the pre 1928 version, after that it became the type now seen on Pendennis Castle at Didcot.

Ah yes, BR green for Manors slipped my mind. As for the rest, didn't want to overload @City of truro fan too much all at once! And seeing as we mentioned lamps upthread, pre-1936 lamps were red, after that a gradual change to white lamps occurred.

Ignoring some slight inacuracies with the current lining, fully lined out with garter crest is a perfectly legit livery for a 45xx. 4555 just happened to be built after it was stopped.

    Looks good!

The wonders of Great Western design, I completely forgot that the 45xx was such an old design!

I am not sure why the Dartmouth Steam Railway attracts comments about what it is called this week. It has had that name for a few years now. It is a name based on what was preferred when a survey of patrons were asked and of couse reflects the companies total operating areas.
Names locos, even if not carried in pre nationalisation and BR days, are welcomed by the paying travellers - especially families and children. After all they are usually the ones who have been very familiar with those famous Thomas and Friends names. Flying Scotsman is more well known for its name than a specific type of locomotive.

Because there is no reason for it to be "right". It's entirely up to them how they paint or name their locos. It's just certain railway enthusiasts who can't cope with anything which - in their view - isn't 110% authentic.

Remember that the "inauthentic" phenomenon is not exclusive to Dartmouth. 88, 841, 1264(?) 1501(?), 5521, 9466, 35005, 45699, 46441, 46521, 61306, 73050, 75029, 80135, '90733', '90775', 92203, 92214, more than one Jinty, several Black 5s and countless industrial locomotives all come to mind as having carried names and/or liveries in preservation that they never actually had whilst in pre-preservation service. Furthermore, some engines have been fitted with different whistles in preservation e.g. 46512.

There will be an upsurge in the number of railways wanting compartment stock to allow people to carry out 'self-isolation' on their days out... ;)

Maybe they aren't too hung up on heritage and want to strip it out and turn it into an open.
Maybe I need to get out more. :)

It's spelt Lydham Manor, built in December 1950, so it would never have carried GWR livery before preservation. It might not mean anything to you but it is one of a class of 30 locomotives named after manor houses (spooky that ain't it?). Lydham Manor house is near Bishops Castle in Shropshire.

Surely they'd just buy a TSO though, even if it was a Mk2. There's plenty about, okay they might require work but I don't think they are short on operational coaches anyway.

Also the carriage was recently operational, so the interior is probably okay.

Many railways shy away from using Mk2s. They tend to be unpopular with passengers who consider them too modern.

Mk1s in almost operational condition don’t often come up for sale. Maybe just too good an opportunity for them to miss, even if it is a compartment coach.

Yeah I totally get Mk2s a lot of lines try and avoid, but P&D are a bit different and they use DMU stock afterall.

I read in Steam Railway, Llangollen had a large donation off Jeremy Hoskins, and 92212 to is due to be overhauled there. Maybe the CK was part of the deal.

It had been out of use for quite a while, but was re-painted blue/grey for a gala as we had no coaches of that colour. Needs a good clean up inside, but also a lot of work to body pillars, panelling etc.

The coach was owned by a couple of our members and was a private sale. Why would you assume any connection with 92212 ?
