I came across this photo from April 2005 while going through an old album. While we get the odd mainline special to Southend this loco was in steam less than two miles from where I live at a timber yard by the A127. I believe it was subsequently at the Epping and Ongar Railway for a while.

Looking at the photo, what is the bulge to the side of the cylinder/valve?

Bypass valve for coasting with steam shut.
Takes a wide loading gauge to locate it just there.

    By the way...
Finnish locos should be green, every thing else looks rather odd.

Yes we had it on a very short 5ft gauge demo line at Ongar for a while. Fun to drive, :D but would have loved to have a go on a line that was more than 100 yards long.

It looks like a continental manufacturer trying to build a "wild west" engine for a trainset :)

I wonder if it would be easier to re-gauge to Irish (ie 3" outwards) rather than in to UK standard. Or just ship it back to Finland...

The owner had several Finnish locos and no plans to regauge any of them when I knew him (we've lost touch since the change of EOR ownership in 2008 and I no longer volunteer there). His timber business (which had a branch at Leigh-on- Sea ;)) had connections to Finland, hence his interest in their railways.

PS. I have good reason to regard that loco with affection, as it was my publicity about it's arrival at Ongar that resulted in a new lady volunteer joining us. . . we've been married for 12 years now. :)

    Thank you.

The owner had it transfered to his farm near Enfield. AFAIK it is still there.

"Somewhere near St Albans" is all that seems to be available online. It's there with 0-6-0T Vr1 792.

Safety valves on top of the steam collector dome?

Did Mr Drummond (of the NBR/ Caley/ LSWR) spend time in Finland?

Thanks for all the information. I love the shot at Ongar (which has changed so much since the shot was taken)

There were a couple of these Finnish engines at Ongar. Two are now owned by the Gentleman who owns Mayflower I think, and on his farm in Norfolk? This red one I have no idea of its whereabouts, but surely can't be an easy thing to hide?

Bad form to reply to your own post, but chatting to someone at work earlier and they did there's a barn near Hemel Hempstead with a pair of tracks outside, with a single line heading along the edge of the field. Clearly visible on Google Earth, it looks "about" standard gauge. Possibly 5'? It looks like there's a footpath at the end of the line, so maybe I'll have to go for a walk with a pair of binoculars one day!

Yes, That'll be the place I meant in my previous posting.
    The track is 5ft gauge.

There was an article in Steam Railway the other month about David Buck's Finnish pacific. He's got a 250-ft length of track he drives it up and down on. No mention of another Finnish one, though.

The other one is at a farm outside Weeting (near Brandon), where they hold an annual traction engine rally........

That's 1016, at Fifield near Windsor. You can see the loco on Google Earth, along with the loop of standard gauge track.

    Vr3 792, an 0-6-0T and Tk3 1151, a 2-8-0, are near Hemel Hempstead.

1060 was at Fengate Agricultural Light Railway, Norfolk in 2018.
So is that a recent photo? i.e. is 1060 definately at Fifield now?
(Can't rely on Google Earth as that can be several years between updated pictures :().

The picture of 1060 was taken at Fengate Farm, Weeting at the 2017 Weeting traction engine rally. As far as I know, its still there!
(and shows on Google Earth as such...)
