Can't help with the date, but that day I watched it slip to a standstill just outside Leeds near the site of the old Holbeck High and Low level station. The support crew, after a lot of loco trying,( back a couple of yards, forward one yard,) had to hand sand the rails for a long way to get it moving again. Wife was shopping, I had a grandstand view of all the activity. It was a Saturday.

Its during the 90's as she had metal smokebox door handles between 1980-85

The top feed cover is missing in the third photo - I think it was like this when it returned from overhaul in 89/90 if that helps.

its looks to be the southbound ( return ) working between Skipton and Cononley but the Skipton by-pass would now run behind the trainset if my guess re location is correct.

I think you may be correct re 1990.

I took a number of images of 46229 working on the S&C during 1990 and the top feed cover is missing on three of the dates.
Top feed cover missing; 13 April, 14 July and 25 August. Top feed in place; 20th October.

The first one, Friday 13th April 1990 was, I believe, 46229's first run after overhaul and featured a 'Friends of the NRM' charter from York to Carlisle & return. An NRM headboad was displayed as was a smaller NRM disc-type motif which was affixed to the centre bufferbeam lamp-iron. The 14th July & 25th August runs featured a CME headboard. I have compared these shots with the ones posted and they are definately different occasions but the lack of a top feed cover between April and August that year may go someway towards dating the OP's shots.

I agree with the southbound working but believe that this picture is taken from the bypass bridge at the Cononley end of the bypass showing the train leaving Skipton past what is now the much larger Snaygill Industrial Estate.
