When , and what, was the last ex BR steam engine cut up by a Scrap merchant ?

I recall that six axle bogies (i.e. with the 1 from the 1Co removed) from scrapped class 40s were used around then in snow ploughs, to replace ex-steam tenders.

In that light, there were at least a couple of former LBSCR tenders that survived on BR into the 1980s in departmental service. DS 70183 lasted until 1981 before being sold to Woodhams and subsequently to Madame Tussauds. ADS 3202 became a mobile load bank and survived in departmental service until 1984; it was then sold to the Manston group who had preserved a loco without a tender, and then subsequently sold to the Bluebell.

Parts of both are now incorporated into the tender being built for Beachy Head - essentially the wheel sets from DS 70183 (the frame was cut up by Madame Tussauds) and the frame from ADS 3202.

Recycling at it's best :) Many Schools Class were scrapped minus their tenders and a few of these remain in preservation.

Yes, ADS70228 was an ex Schools class tender that became a snow plough and is now rebuilt with a new tank and serving as the tender for U class 1638. There is also ADS70225 which is still a snow plough somewhere on the railway.

There is a boiler from T1 at Avon valley railway. But no other bits to make a new one.

The boiler would be suitable for either a T1 or an A12 IIRC. Having several surviving 0-4-4Ts (including 3 ex-LSWR), my preference would have to be for the 0-4-2 'Jubilee'. Perhaps not as well known as the LBSC Stroudley 'Gladstones', but they lasted well and would look the part on several lines. No 'big chufferitis' there! :)

Yes it would be a nice engine. And the boiler would look right. The midhants tried to build a tender engine by putting a different body on a austereity but it looked rubbish so they had to sell it in the end

FWIW The Mid Hants didn't put "a different body" on a Austerity - it's not like a Hornby model you know. The loco in question is based at Ribble Steam Railway but was out on hire before the shutdown. If anyone is interested the real story can be found here https://ribblesteam.org.uk/exhibits/steam/hunslet-2890-0-6-0-douglas/ ....but what this has got to do with the original thread title defeats me!

I think it arrived at Tunbridge Wells for a season at the Spa Valley shortly before the lockdown.

Going back to something slightly more relevant to the thread....
.....I recall some years back a very indignant letter appeared in Bluebell News regarding the Beachy Head proposal, when the ex-GNR Atlantic boiler had been acquired, but not much else. The correspondent said he would not support the project because"Not a nut or bolt had originated in Brighton Works" (I think these were his exact words) Well, thanks to the purchase of these two tenders, that now isn't the case - and of course, the regulator handle of the original 32424 (admittedly minus nuts and bolts!) has been donated to the new build project. There will thus be quite a bit of LB&SCR-originating material in the new engine, which in one sense gives it a bit of history before it has even turned a wheel under its own power, but even the bits that are newly fabricated (Or came form the L&NER) don't worry me - I'm just looking forward to seeing it in steam.

I think another one that was a tank engine but got turned to a tender engine was the red furniss engine. It was a 040 anyway but they put a tender on it

Sorry but you're wrong again. The locos in question (yes, there are two of them) were both built as 0-4-0 tender locos for the Furness Railway. Later they were sold to a steelworks in Barrow where they were fitted with saddle tanks. On withdrawal they were donated to a special school in Ulverston? In more recent years the Furness Railway Trust restored one to its original configuration as a tender loco. This loco's 10yr overhaul is nearing completion at Ribble Steam Railway. The other, still in tank engine form was left to the FRT and will eventually be restored in its industrial guise.
I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated if you would do a bit of fact checking before posting.
    Ray.
