Sorry it involves politics but it is most rail related.

In the list of reopenings there is no mention of the most prominent reopening campaigns -
    1) Skipton - Colne
    2) Lewes Uckfield
    3) Tavistock - Bere Alston
    4) Bath Green Park - Bournemouth West

ok I made the last one up, but I bet it made your heart skip!

So we've had the Lib Dems wanting to re-open lines. We've had the current government saying that there is another mainline between London and Birmingham.
I wonder which railways the Tory's will re open???
Maybe the Green party will say sod the world re introduce steam.......

but its the greens, get with the vibe man, rope up the horse to an open wagon and away you go. Or would a road/railer conversion on a racing trap be better?

Sadly it there may be valid points but a party in opposition is free to say certain outrageous proposals and a third party even more so, but I bet 50p and the remains of a fluffy packet of polos in my coat pocket that supposing they came to power such spending proposals would dissappear faster than a city salary bonus and by the following day would officially never have been stated!

    Call me cynical?

They did. That is unless they want to do things the difficult way and reinstate the Western line!

Talking of station reopening wish-list, neatly brings one round to the old chestnut of the largest town without a railway station.

Mansfield was once, until the Nottingham line reopened. Now I think the winner is Corby, which is in line for a new station. May even be open?

So, casting around there is considerable debate about the "next" largest town after Corby that is bereft of a rail service. If you look on the National Rail Enquiries website under non-rail destinations, there are loads of them, but which is the largest? Livingston, Leigh, Gosport, Dudley, Alnwick, Dunstable,Wetherby, Washington?.....

Someone must be an expert on this one..." size matters"...

Mods: this is probably in the wrong forum, how about "General Railway Chat"?

I can remember reading somewhere that Bury is now the largest town without a Network Rail station (although it is of course connected by the East Lancs Railway)

I think Gosport is the largest town without any rail link whatsoever.

Then you have Wells as the only city not rail connected. I know you mentioned size as in population but by 'weight' of name it should be Wells. Plus shortly we will have the ideal loco to perform the first run.

Erm! What about Livingston North and Livingston South. Both a distance from the town centre itself, but both firmly in the town. Continuing OT for a moment; even Cambridge station is equally far from the city centre.

Wasn't Haverhill, Suffolk, a contender for this title at one time?

I suspect that Haverhill may eventually get its rail line back. Population is currently about 22,000 and I think I read in the Essex paper that there were plans for another 3000-4000 houses to be built quite soon which will take the population close to 30,000. Campaign website is still up

    http://www.csrra.co.uk/

Someone mentioned the Braintree line. It is about to get an upgrade with a new passing loop to allow more trains due to capacity problems. However the Council along with the local authorities for Colchester and Ipswich have been making noises about reopening the Braintree to Stortford line but routing via the rapidly expanding Stansted airport. There is some local annoyance that to get to Stansted, from Colchester and the East Anglia coast you have a 60-100 minute bus ride or have to go via Liverpool Street (2.5 hours).

I don't think anyone is getting their hopes up though [-o< :-#
