Now that I think about it, BR maroon seems to have been a favourite choice over the years when people fancied giving their ex-BR locomotives an 'inauthentic' coat of paint. 47357, 48624 and Galetea have all had this treatment, and 46441 is still in BR maroon to this day.

Honourable mention goes to Olton Hall's Hogwarts livery, which is BR maroon (with the alternative lining that some engines 'authentically' used) in all but the logo on the tender, which in itself was styled to look like a BR logo.

It's a pity that the County Tank new build wasn't progressed as it might have looked nice in GWR crimson lake.

While this is very true and the idea has merit, the actual implementation does present some problems at the moment!

While there has been discussion of the different shades of GWR green, and colour-blind people's inability to differentiate between green and red, I think that might be considered an extreme case!

No, that can’t be right. I’ve seen the documentary evidence and it shows that the GWR had only chocolate and cream carriages and lined green locos. The GWR only actually had four loco designs: an 0-4-2T that photographic evidence shows could only manage to pull one carriage; a matchbox on six wheels; another tank engine that originated from the prairies of the US always hauling a set of two carriages called “B”; and a general purpose 4-6-0 called Saint Kingcastle Hall (or Manor). Normal operating practice was for Saint Kingcastle Hall (or Manor) to stop at a station adjacent to the sea (or flower bed) where one of the one coach trains was waiting. The one coach train would then run to a terminus along the “Bacon and Lettuce” line (generally shortened to a BLT) where it would run into a bay platform, while one of the American prairies would be in the main platform and the matchbox on wheels would spend the entire day shunting a single siding in the company of an amphibious brake vsn

You forgot the bit about all GW drivers having to go round with the oil can at every stop.

Apparently the GWR Crimson Lake livery was more than just the visions of colour-blind people. "No.2225, a Churchward 'County' tank, [was painted in] unique, lined crimson-lake livery circa 1909 - painted thus as an experiment, to match the then-current coaching stock livery."

My source for that is this page, which also shows No. 2225 in model form: http://www.crphillips-models.co.uk/gwrmodelspage17.html

I'm not surprised they had to do this if this is how they oiled up and prepared their locos.
(from 4.25 onwards ). Mind you, I guess 60 minutes to prepare a Castle doesn't leave much time for any other approach. There's also a prime example of a GW fireman showing his gorilla-like tendencies at 6.45 .

'Hogwarts' isn't actually BR maroon, although the lining is BR orange style, as per BR(W) locos. The main shade is much more orange than BR maroon. ASs it said previously, it's a Dulux mixed colour.

For what it's worth, when Bert Hitchen repainted 34027 for the book launch tour, he seem to remember him saying he'd acquired some EWS maroon, as it was certainly a more purple shade. As a point of detail, he only over-painted the principal green areas, leaving the crests and the lining, between the orange and back, green.

Fascinating, so is the drab WCRC Dulux Damson Dream or similar? Be interested for a large scale 33? With Williamson's a 3 figure sum for a tin, I can understand the savings... Would be great to see 33025 in Special BR Blue as 'Sultan' though. I'll even fund it & come and paint it!

I asked for the authenticity police not the pedantry police.

Especially impressive how quickly they painted and repainted the first vehicle of the train at 7.36 - 8.00

What was truly impressive was finding archive film from the 1830s - with sound as well! OK it was still black and white, but still ..,

I think it was very good of the GWR to give their drivers elocution lessons as well. The accent was more refined than the machinery.
