Not sure if this is one wagon, two wagons, or no wagons for sale!

If you search for some of the wagon numbers on the RHRP survey pages, at least some of the vehicles shown in a ratty state have been 'restored' to the condition seen in photo 6 on the listing.

I kind of get the idea about why you might want a grounded body as a summer house or something, but not one on its wheels. I'd have thought the market for wagons on underframes but commanding 'restored' prices, without being 'restored' to a condition a heritage railway could stick straight in a train, would be quite limited. But, I might be wrong!

A couple of those photographed have wooden underframes too. £1000 seems a lot for some wheelsets and a pile of firewood. Especially in these times of uncertainty.

Problem is, the seller is looking through the eyes of someone who sees lots of ££ signs when words like Glamping are able to be banded about, rather than anyone who might actually realise the true scrap metal/firewood value of such things!

A look in related items / search brings up quite a few bodies. If it's lucky enough to have a lick of paint applied, that'll set you back £7k (must provide own roof mind!)

Or if you fancy one WITH a roof, £12k.

Most of the vehicles shown were sold from Mangapps during a clear-out of surplus items about three years ago. The buyer has a site adjacent to the K&ESR which he has developed for "glamping" and has done a good job of restoring the ex-Royal Ordnance Factory sliding door van shown and a SR PMV, but the unrestored vehicles are obviously now surplus to him- no doubt the current national situation is a factor in his decision to sell them.

What is the history of the MoS wagons? Were they built for them or bought second hand from the 'main line'

Of the two ex MoD vans that came from Mangapps (they actually belonged to a late railwayana collector friend who used them for storage), the one that has been restored was a sliding door van, similar to an LNER design but from a large batch built for the Ministry of Supply in 1944. (There is another of the same type pictured in the Ebay listing, though that one did not come from Mangapps.) The other is a former ICI salt van, later sold to the Royal Ordnance Factories. Both the ex Mangapps vans were obtained from Booths of Rotherham after withdrawal from the MoD.

Is the BR planked van (photo 3 on the listing) an ex-Mangapps vehicle? It looks like B756620 (see second photo at http://www.ws.rhrp.org.uk/ws/WagonInfo.asp?Ref=6465). With reference to the first photo on the RHRP site, I'm unsure why they'd advertise this for sale in its 'unrestored' state when it appears that they have completely rebuilt it.

Anyway a curiosity... it appears to have independent either-side handbrakes, which doesn't seem right for a BR van. But it also appears to be properly attached to the underframe, so doesn't appear to be a re-wheeled grounded body - or if it is, it has been done well. What's the story with this one?

    Just curious!

It is indeed ex Mangapps. It was obtained in our very early days, as a body and underframe, from a farmer friend at Ulting, near Maldon. We had also obtained the underframe from an ex MoS mineral wagon which donated the wheelsets and running gear- this explains the independent, either side brakes- it's really a "Van Unfit"! In the early days of Mangapps we grabbed any rolling stock we could find- the LMS sliding door van in the listing is another example and has a similar history. As more interesting vehicles became available these "made-up" oddities got cast aside and neglected, so we were delighted when the present owner offered to purchase them, thus relieving us of the difficult decision to scrap them.

I would hve thought that it might be worthwhile making some 'reproduction' van bodies for Glamping, all new material, insulation electrics, plumbing factory fitted.

There is one by the WSR somewhere (Between Williton & Stogumber?) admittedly the dimensions are wrong but its probably a more useful shape

Is it really an astronomical sum being asked though? Personally I thought the starting price was quite reasonable considering condition of it. There's also the rarity factor as well, can't be many of these still knocking around outside of preserved railways now surely?

In some regards I feel a lot of eBay sellers, of this sort of railway equipment, are like those who's Great Uncle Cedric was a driver on the "railways" and had driven Flying Scotsman, when it comes to the starting price being asked. When asked where he was a driver.......... Snowdon/Ravenglass & Eskdale, didn't matter that both lines are narrow gauge.

It depends on the condition but that is not a bad price for a sturdy garden shed.

We have two wooden underframe box vans for disposal at Llangollen which can be acquired for the cost of their scrap metal components.
