Plus, we don't know how the virus is going to impact upon family finances, or how people are going to plan for events. Would you sink a chunk of cash on tickets for an event that may or may not run.

The economic hit most families are going to suffer is going to be huge so there maybe less disposable cash for things like Santa specials.

I think it is a very prudent decision by the GWSR to not run them this year and to make that decision now. Lots of businesses are making decisions now about the next 12 months and I think most are going to err on the side of caution.

    Re Timescales for ordering toys.
How long does it take for the Container ship of plastic toys to get from Shanghai to Felixstowe?
Add on UK distribution and delivery by mid November at the latest.

So when do you need to place that order to get them made?
Length of time to make them as they wont be made without an order placed.

One thing with this lockdown at least the heritage locos are not suffering any wearing and tearing due to running in any news if any vaccines been used or new medication to contain it would be a godsend for all the globes continents suffering this uncertain pandemic ( not been able to coordinate are work in groups in confined warehouses) roll on in 12 months time if thats what was predicted to find a vaccine.

    Add wrapping!

I've been trying to find in SVR publications an article I read when they ordered their 20,000 presents for delivery beginning of November, but I remember being surprised how early it was. I can't remember when though.

My wife worked in retail (card shops) and Christmas ordering was April, to put out stock in October. Put that back two months for services at December and you're looking at ordering dates in the coming weeks?

Also remembering that Shanghai, and manufacturing, have been disrupted too.

Glad I don't have to make these decisions

There seems to have been a slight rethinking re Santas this morning. The GWSR website now says we have a team of volunteers looking at ways that a "Santa Experience" can be provided while still complying with social distancing rules. This will be different from our normal Santa offering. More information on the website once this process has concluded.
It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

When we were having B747 interiors modified in Hong Kong we worked on 4 weeks from collection to drop off at Kai Tak Airport. Of course there were a lot more ships operating then than there will be this year and we were shipping full container loads.

Everyone seems to be missing the obvious, that being that Santa is in a most-at-risk age group and is unlikely to be allowed out of Lapland anyway needing to be quarantined to first week of Jan - doh!!

Absolutely correct. Elderly (well, very elderly), overweight, underlying health problems (caused by alcohol and diabetes due to mince pies and mulled wine) and dubious police record due to forcible entry to properties via chimneys.

The usual ordering and transport for off the shelf parts from China to being at the wholesaler's warehouse is around 100 days from order if you want to keep shipping cost to a minimum. Anything made up of sub assemblies is around 120-150 days. Highly specialised parts upwards of 180 days. This is for fast moving auto parts and I would expect similar for toys.

Following the disaster that the Chinese have wreaked on this country we should be looking for alternative suppliers.

We had an update from our chairman yesterday explaining when we can get back on the railway:

Basically we can go back in 4 phases:
    1. Safety critical stuff - I guess things like boiler tests, inspections of lifting gear, overhead wires, hoists, jacks etc.
    2. Outdoor departments like P'way, lineside drainage and clearance
    3. Workshop departments like C+W, loco dept. etc.
    4. Running trains again
Currently we're in phase 1, and I suspect the next time restrictions are eased even slightly we can go to phase 2. Hopefully 3 won't be too far away either, as aside from anything else, that timetable board I've done for Broadway is getting in the way at home! 4 obviously still a long way away.

Not to mention the the cheap labour he uses to make his toys, repeated breeches of elf and safety then theres the question of reindeer abuse, suitable resting periods etc

As it's the last day before the emergency appeal expires, There is an important and very welcoming message from the GWRT (Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway Trust) on their website. "First of all, I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone who contributed to our £250,000 appeal to help pay for repairs to the Gotherington landslip. This total was achieved in less than ten weeks – a remarkable achievement". There's also a heartwarming message from Glyn Cornish, the chairman of the GWRT.
