Yes, that was a good day. I got the sleeper up from Euston overnight and Jon Bowers picked me up at Fort Bill. I had a stinking hangover (a bottle of red to myself on the sleeper wasn't the best idea!) plus I had a chest infection as well. Still, got all the shots so that's all that mattered!

That’s being a wimp!! I used to drive up overnight, 500 miles, do the charter during the day, a few pints in the Grog in the evening, bed at 11. The next morning it was a bit of a struggle to get up at 5 am for the day on Rannoch Moor! I now do the drive during the day, getting too old!

It's the curve at the top of Kinloid (or "F..kingloid" as its been called on occasions if you run hard up before getting there!). I think you would recognise it John if the loco was tender first as is usual for the return run.

Thanks Peter, I thought it was there but the loco being that way round confused me a bit. The K1 was turned for a couple of days on the Jacobite a few years ago but I’ve not seen a 5 that way round on the Jacobite.

Another lovely picture there Bob, with "Brasso" (the late Tony Brassington) in the driving seat. Thanks for posting.

Some leg work for you John !

    The K1 is a GB7 picture, the 5 a Jacobite.
For anyone who has seen the 1960 BBC film 'West Highland' this is the approximate location where the train picks up and drops off the school children at the lineside. The cottage was on the flat land below the railway. I can't really imagine what living there must have been like (and as a youngster I've stayed at my Great Uncle's cottage at the end of the road in Strathconon where he worked as a gamekeeper).

I didn't know Tony had died. I met him through a friend who had worked with him at Crewe.

No leg work, just need a boat to row across from the road! A few years ago a train crew, including a fireman who posts on here, set fire to the mountainside near here. As I drove back from Mallaig the Fort Bill fire service were parked up in a lay-by presumably deciding if they should just let it burn itself out.

    Some Jacobite characters.

The two comedians, on the left Paul Kane, sadly no longer with us and Frank Santrain. Frank is now well in his 80s and not in the best of health. Picture taken at Rannoch Station in October 2009

    490 62034 (62005) Paul Kane & Frank Santrain Rannoch 04-10-09.jpg

Three drivers, L to R Alec McDonald, I think Alec spent his entire railway career at Mallaig and Fort William and knew every inch of the line, Ian Riley and the youngest driver on the roster, Matt Earnshaw. Picture taken at Mallaig after Alec's last run before retirement.

1381 Alec MacDonald, Ian Riley & Matt Earnshaw, Mallaig 26-10-18.jpg

Some of the team who keep the whole thing running pose at Mallaig after arrival of the last train of the season in October 2018. In the middle is the legendary star of the TV screen and guard Florence McClean, her son is also in the picture now working as a WC fireman

1382 West Coast loco and support crew, Mallaig 26-10-18.jpg

Finally, who is this dodgy character?

Strictly speaking you are right of course Al, but having 'set the hare running' I think it should continue on here, as a sort of 'Reality Jacobite' whilst the real thing isn't operating. I always like seeing other people's efforts as they give 'inspiration' - I will dig out a few more of mine in due course.

Actually no. They a bringing a lot of pleasure to members right here and given the negativity exhibited earlier its a great antidote. I'd like to see them remain, but I only speak for myself ATM.

I've no doubt there has been a rainbow over Glenfinnan Viaduct since October 2003 but what are the chances of getting it in sync with the K1 again? my only regret is I didn't take the wide angle lens up there so could't get it all in. There is an old Yorkshire saying that in the Dales you can get all four seasons in a day, in the Highlands you can experience them all in ten minutes.
