Pic hasn't come through again Phil. The pic is on railforums which is behind a security login, so you can't directly link from that site.

    Cheers

And it reminds you what a great railway the GCR was in its time - engineering, formation and stations etc. It's the one significant heritage line without a main line link, but give it time.

Significant = double track.......main line registered locomotives have lived there etc.

So, by that definition SVR, NYMR, KWVR BBR, SR, TDR and all others except the RHDR are not significant. I think not.

Double track fair point, but second point I'll take you to task a little, whilst having several mainline registered locos that have worked there it's hardly like you can show up in the summer and say 70000 or 46100 has dropped in for an unexpected visit during a gap during mainline duties. 70013, 30777 and 5305 have always had to go on tour for a season.
I could also mention how many times it's made a profit but I won't.

    Main line registered, eh?
Last time I looked on TOPS (a couple of years back) I was astonished by the number of steam engines still on TOPS. ('The Lady Armaghdale' for example.) Of the engines on the Mid Hants last year the following are on TOPS: 828, 850, 925, 41312, 73096, 35005, 92212, (E&OE). None of which are likely to venture on to NR (except, possibly, 35005 to extract it from the works at some point).

Let's not debate this ad nauseum. Each heritage railway has something it would say is special. I was simply saying that the GCR is a significant railway and an ex main line railway with all that goes with it. It also has a distinctive feature that others do not - the double track. In addition, it has big engines including some that have/have had main line status.

So for all those reasons it is the one line 'of significance' that needs a main line connection and hopefully will have one.

I don't, of course, have a problem with your list but if we were thinking of lines where it would be good for main line registered locomotives to visit without being trucked there - something that some loco owners will quite rightly not allow - then the GCR is the one.

    From the GCR website
    "
    Added on Friday 22nd May...

Today we have taken the first very careful steps towards our eventual return. Although the railway remains closed to the public for now, and majority of departments remain closed to all for the time being, a very small number of the team have returned to work in a carefully-controlled way as we begin to restart our operations.

With precautions in place, including Driver and Fireman wearing face coverings, and Guard alone in the coaches, BR Standard Class 2 78018 completed some important test runs along the line today to confirm the success of repair works."

Good News! Have any other railways started the slow process of return?

Intresting to read in the latest edition of Main Line that the bridge just north of Quorn, that had to have a 10mph speed restriction put on it in January, actually requires complete replacement!

Apparently design work for the new one is complete and tenders have already been solicited for the work to be done.

    From GCR Website :-
Provisional date for first passenger services: Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th July 2020.

Work is well-advanced towards a projected first date for running passenger trains of 25th July subject, of course, to rules in place from the government at that time. Intensive preparation has gone into a recovery plan which will be submitted to the Office of Rail and Road this coming week for their approval; needless to say there a hundreds of considerations on and off-train that must be taken into account to ensure that we operate safely in line with government guidelines and “the new normal”. A number of test trains will run between now and the scheduled opening date to ensure that everything is ready and that all safety critical competencies are updated.

More details will be published as details are confirmed.

Interesting to note that a plan will be submitted to ORR for their approval. No other heritage line has mentioned that it is needed, as far as I have seen. The GCR is on the ball it seems.

Perhaps not on the ball, after all. To quote from the HRA's website (5th June):

"..... the ORR have reiterated an important point which is worth repeating now.

There remains an impression in some circles that heritage railways require ORR approval to recommence operations. The ORR wish to remind heritage rail operators that they have a clear line on this:

Heritage railways do not require, and will not get from, ORR approval to re-commence operations."

But if they fall foul of any regulations the ORR might be interested. After all there are guidelines I understand from the ORR for heritage lines.
I suspect ambulance chasers are watching with interest.

I have no insight on railway regulation, but I certainly would suggest that railways should be on the phone to the HSE.
