    There you go @Jamessquared :)

I'll nominate 46256 as the first candidate.
The ultimate development of the 4-cylinder Pacific in the UK (OK so 46257 might have done too but not so much on the grounds of name!)

LMS 10000 I'll go for, really is something that should have been kept, plus it would dovetail rather nicely with the OP's original suggestion!

A LNER J39. The last-ish in the line of 0-6-0 freight locos.

    A GNR K1. First-ish in a long design line.

LB&SCR L in unrebuilt form or K. Because there are no Lawson Billinton locos preserved and I like Billinton's locos.

Given the recent West Highland interest a K2 and possibly a J37.
A real loss to Scottish railway history was AC cars railbus SC79979 which made it to the Strathspey Railway but was then scrapped - a failed experiment but important as the first one in Scotland.

    C14; as rebuilt by R.W. Urie to a 0-4-0T.
A12; last of the 0-4-2 breed. (Probably the most successful, as well.)
Any of the double-framed 0-6-0 classes, started by Beyer Peacock and continued by the Midland.

We seem to have descended into yet another "Name your favourite loco" thread, as so beloved of @LMS2968 ! :) Ah well, since I'm here, I'll nominate the NSR 4 cylinder tank, No.23 as something a bit different that could have been really interesting if given proper chance. With 8 chuffs per wheel revolution it would have sounded good at any rate.

B16, that was usefull and fast from start to finish.
That would make for some really interesting comparative runs with other 4-6-0s with bigger wheels

A more interesting question though is surely what are the significant gaps in preservation.

Followed by what should be the highest priorities in terms of what we have

Clearly the LMS Twins, 10000 & 10001 were denied their place in preservation despite being the first main line diesel loco's, although the Class 11's fly the flag for the first diesel loco's.

In terms of what would be nice to get running again, what about the GWR diesel railcars? Or getting the Bluebells 4Vep running on the main line?

I can certainly see the attraction & significance of an 'outside framed' loco but City of Truro & Earl of Berkeley have run in recent years.

There are two 2-4-0's though that have never run in Preservation & Hardwicke last ran about 40 years ago.

Then there is the Garratt at Bressingham, not a common loco type in the UK but given the numbers built for export it would be interesting to see a SG Garratt running.

But all those pre BR coaches - for goodness sake never mind whats pulling the train, surely what you are sitting in is what defines the experience?

That's suspiciously close to a big chuffer. You want something more appropriately sized for a heritage line - like a T7 ...
