Evolutionary adaption?! Some might say that railway enthusiasts are a regression to more simple humans. Intensely terratorial, hunting in packs or foraging for photo opportunities.

Why do you think I used the alligator analogy? Ancient creatures yet adapting to changing circumstances to keep going.

I can't speak on behalf of everybody but actually I have a bit more money in my pocket lately cause there's nowhere to go to spend it! I've only filled up £20 of petrol in my car since 16th March!

I am on furlough at 90% (employer 10% + gov 80%) with pension contributions still based on 100% pay.

    I have supported -

DFR (I give a monthly donation via direct debit anyway but have also given 3 extra donations, also renewed my membership for 10 years rather than the 5 I had originally planned)
    WSR - 1 PLC & 1 WSRA
    SVR
    ESR
    Gwili (2)
    Llangollen (2)
    Blaenavon (2)
    Welshpool
Chinnor - despite having never been, it was one I was hoping to do this spring.

I have also made donations to other non-railway charities.

So I haven't gone with the largest sum to one. If everybody did that only the more popular lines would benefit.

    :Saywhat:

The WSR has no major structures. No viaducts or tunnels.

The SVR was a branchline too, they have had A4s, A1, A3, Duchess, King and Bulleids, to name just a few, run on there. They have major structures including Falling Sands Viaduct and Victoria Bridge. I would imagine maintaining the 16 miles of the SVR costs more than the 23 of the WSR, at least per mile if not in total.

The GWSR was a mainline but the ground it was built on wasn't/isn't ideal!

I agree. To me it feels like the lack of maintenance is at least as big a factor, if not greater, than running engines slightly too heavy for the line, bearing in mind the reduced speeds compared to as originally built.

After Steve's comment. that many seem in agreement with, this is a good point at which to remind members why this thread was re-opened. #25198 said:

    Moderators' Message

The thread is being re-opened on a trial basis whilst no trains are operating. This is primarily so that messages and general comments can be posted about current and future plans on the Railway by people associated with the Railway and people with useful information. Anything that does not fit this category will be removed.

Normal Forum rules will also be applied and in particular, to any individuals who choose to ignore the above.
    ---------------------------------
So until trains start running again or new information comes from the Railway or people closely associated with it, there is little more that is new or needs to be said....via this medium anyway. Please bear this in mind before you decide to post.

I am trying to only make comments on this thread when I feel that I have something to contribute, but I think that there are some very real issues about the WSR that are the subject of legitimate comment and discussion.

So either as far as I can see

    1. We open another WSR thread for 'Non Operational' matters, which was basically what happened over Washford, or
    2. Continue on this thread simply for the sake of having discussion in one place

Put simply, we don't trust all people to keep comments within Forum Rules on WSR matters and that's why it's not as other threads. A member is already on suspension; there could easily have been others.

Washford/S&DRT matters - The thread remains open but there is nothing new to say and that is why it has been quiet for a week. Just as it should be. Thank you to everyone.
WSR Operations - Since re-opening, useful additional information has been posted by WSRA Trustees and links made to PLC statements. Those who have chosen to comment, many times, have actually said little that is new or wasn't known already. We decided to give people some slack but that line has just been reeled back in.

Enough people have said they are tired of the circular debate on WSR matters to confirm that this constraining approach is the only way. It is sad that relevant comments, like the ones you make, are in a minority but rest assured if and when there is something new to say, people will be able to say it on this thread.

I note that the policy of prohibiting people editing other people's posts now only applies in select circumstances and to selected people. A bit like the government policy on lock down.

I’m afraid that’s incorrect. This case was a little different - when you edit a post to put words in people’s mouths then yes it is prohibited, no matter who the member is. In this situation that didn’t happen.

You've always been able to edit other people's posts when you are quoting them in one of your own, but not otherwise AFAIAA.

Not so, it was explicitly stated in a pm to me on more than one occasion that users could not change what was quoted when quoting someone. And in this case words were put in some ones mouth as the quote wasn't accurate as it was changed.

Not ib a way that changes the meaning of what is quoted.

Full disclosure I think the ruling was daft but it is what it is.

Rubbish. Don't waste our time with posts like that. We said that changing what other people post without making it clear that the post was being changed and indicating what part was different was the issue. That remains true.

The 'Govt lock down policy' comment was just an unnecessary swipe. Perhaps you can see why one moderator - i.e. me - is getting fed up with having to deal with some of the stuff on this thread.

With respect Al, I interpreted it the same way as @simon at the time, under no circumstances could we edit another person's post when we quoted it regardless of intent, other than clipping it. I recall someone (possibly even me) being rebuked for doing it in good jest when all involved understood what was going on and were happy with it.
You have my sympathies in trying to keep this thread under control though, it can't be easy, so thank you for allowing it to continue.

Not rubbish; I was informed on at least three separate occasions in the past, there may be more but I can't be bothered to check, that changes to quoted posts were not tolerated even if the changes were pointed out (and on at least one of those occasions even if the person's who's post was changed had no objection to it).

If you are fed up with certain aspects of being a voluntary moderator on a commercial website, that is something you will have to decide on. It's not for me to comment. Edit @flying scotsman123 has put it more politely than I have.
