    Hello

Can anyone recommend decent books and/or websites with information and pictures of the WD 2-8-0s (O7) in LNER service?

Particularly interested in the paint schemes they wore, if they were plain black or carried LNER on the tenders.

    Thanks

Believe that they were plain black with 'NE' on the tender.

    Hi Hicks,

They carried plain gill sans lettering and numbering with LNER on the tender when built.

They also carried shaded lettering and numbering:

I haven't got access to my books but I imagine NE may well have been carried, but my recollection is that when they were being built LNER using the yellow shaded transfers was more commonly seen.

Bachmann made a model of the above loco:

Thank you! The only pic online I could find of WDs with LNER on the tender were of Bachman models.

Get hold of a copy of "Locomotives of the LNER" part 6B as published by the Railway Correspondence and Travel Society (RCTS) for authoritative information on these locos.

Rowledge's Heavy Goods Engines of the War Department Volume 3 has four interesting photos in it.
LNER 3165 at Neasden in 1947 with W D still on the tender.
LNER 3152 with LNER on the tender.
BR numbered E 3119 with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender.
BR numbered 63183 again with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender

Quite a lot of information in the LNER on-line encyclopedia here:

    https://www.lner.info/locos/O/o7.php

The LNER had many hundreds of WDs on loan, but decided in November 1946 to purchase 200 of them ( at £4500 each), shortly afterwards designated Class O7.

The original WD livery was khaki-brown, changing to khaki-green for those built from March 1944. LNER works were instructed in January 1947 to letter the tenders "L N E R" on the 200 purchased O7s (as shown in the photo posted by Simon Martin). If repainting was required, it was to be to LNER standard (i.e. goods engine black). The RCTS booklet has only a single photo of an O7 in black and lettered "LNER", so I suspect the majority did not get a repaint during 1947, and eventually went straight from WD khaki into BR livery.
