I quite fancy a Lucas teaspoon, though I'd prefer one which still had most of its original blueing intact.

I imagine it would look quite good, mounted above the fireplace. Would certainly go well with my County Donegal left-handed pen nib.

Probably the bloke selling it, using a different account. The moral of the story is never bid until the last few seconds of an ebay auction.

I'n definitely going to wrap mine up in cotton wool, put some dessicants in and store it until my laddo is of age.

I still have the original handle off mine as it was a shorty but I put a longer handle onto it, great for the 60009, 60103 and for the black 5 and it only cost me a tenner :smt003

Theres a thought, how much do you reckon an original short handle for a lucas shovel is worth :-k

The Friends of Hagley Hall will sell you a shovel with your name engraved on the metal for about £38. They do short and long - handled versions.

Or carve it into the handle.

Are you worried about losing it? 8-[

Did'nt think of that , dounno why , would have thought it be the first thing to come to mind , and no so worried about it being taken more just as a personal touch i guess.

Having looked at both Lucas shovels, DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn) shovels and some others I came to the conclusion that the "Richard Carters" shovels have one flaw: a slightly curved bottom. Five minutes with the press at our railway (SHM in the Netherlands) gave my shovel a nice flat surface. The first half hour I used way to much force to get my coal, now I'm used to it, but using much less force :)

I spend about half an hour with the shovels of other fireman (those who use a Carter shovel as well) and some told me (unasked) having the same experience.

    Hope this helps.

Do the pressing nice and gentle. It will take some redoing because the shovel resist pressure very well, so going front to back a couple of times will do the job nicely.

I am after a long handle (minimum 17 " to where it goes into the socket) in good condition for my Lucas shovel, preferably original with the steel strap riveted over the T piece, does anyone have one tucked away somewhere for sale?
