Not sure if this should be in bullhead memories or not but its about steam.

Just wondered if there are any stories of locos that had been forgotten round the back of steam sheds that the shed forman didnt want to see go or any lucky escapees?

i heard a few stories on the elr the other week and just wondered?

    cheers Dan

Didn’t Beachy Head get put around the back of Eastleigh shed and stay there for some time. Just a shame that the Bluebell Railway didn’t get their hands on her before the scrap man did.

Don't know too much about steam but the Carlisle Kingmoor foremen certainly protected D200 / 40122 for many years until it was given proper respect and "repatriated" to the world of preservation. The late Brian Webb was closely involved and the name "John Duncan" echoes in my mind as a co-conspirator.

61572 at Norwich was a famous one, more recently the preserved Class 306 unit seems to have survived courtesy of a similar situation.

An unauthorised move may or may or not have taken place.

Some persons mentioned above, and another person whose surname may be construed as the bark of a dog, and a man on a TOPS machine 69 miles south may or may not also have been involved.

An engine which may or may not have been 25312 may or may not have removed 40122 from Kingmoor to Upperby, thereby dropping it off the TOPS radar.

I may or may not have been sitting in the former 12E TOPS office watching all of this happen.

What about the original 'Ryde'? Not the O2, but the one hidden at the works of the same name and then shipped over to Eastleigh for breaking up in WWII - as far as I can remember at work without my library to hand..!

The full story by Eric Best is published in "Southern Way Number 4" published by Noodle Books. Unfortunately Beachy Head was scrapped before the Bluebell Railway really got started. http://www.kevinrobertsonbooks.co.uk/product/view/643

Not quite the Shed Forman but thanks to the management of Swindon Works we have D1015 Western Champion on the mainline, the works manager at the time had 1015 on display on the turntable with D821/D7029 and D818, he asked us(the DTG) to spruce the loco up and that began our association with and eventual purchase of the loco.

Be a very odd decision to cut something up right now, with the price of scrap being what it is... you'd have to need the space very badly indeed.
