    Hi
Iaqyired an old bench a few yrs ago and it lives outside.
I'm looking to preserve it, not restore it
As you can see, it has remnants of the top layer and undercoat of paint which I want to retain.
Can anyone recommend a specific named wood preserver that will preserve the wood but also not react with the paint
    Many thanks

Have a look at the Sikkens range. Expensive, but does the job.

If you have concerns, Email them.

A platform bench is a bit like grandad's axe - over a lifetime it has several generations of planks. I usually have the cast iron shotblasted, and throw away the rotten wood. Just make sure you have the correct dimensions, bearing in mind that those that are on it now are not necessarily correct. 90% of the GWR benches I see are incorrect. When I refurbish a GWR bench I use an original drawing of one for the dimensions.
We were gifted a brand new 'GWR' bench 2 years ago (too short.....) and the paint is peeling already, so if refurbishing, think about the wood, the knots (where damage often starts) and the preparation for the paint. I also use SS nuts and bolts, as that is another point where deterioration starts.

I realise you have a text you want to conserve, but unless you keep it indoors age is inevitable.

You could coat with with clear cuprinol which shouldn't affect the paint. Just brush it liberally on as it has the consistency of water and soaks into the wood. It can be bought in cans from most DIY places.
