The Jacobite 2020

I fail to see how images taken in 1994 are relevant to operations on the Mallaig line in 2020.

 

Not a cop out at all as I don’t see why I should have to explain myself to you. You’ve obviously made up your mind as to what you were going to do in spite of the feelings of others. Didn’t realise it was your forum, I thought it was owned by someone else.

 

They remind me - and I'm sure others - of how the Jacobite has developed into what it was, and hopefully will be again.

As for the poll, though I'm sorry that the announced decision was acted upon, it was forewarned and in keeping with general moderation policy. I wish it hadn't been done, but am not convinced that reversing the move would be the right thing either, hence I've voted "leave them where they are". Even though my preference would have been "for goodness sake, leave them be".

 

The Jacobite has developed into an important and integral part of the local economy and the businesses in Mallaig must be suffering this year as a consequence of not having 700 tourists arrive every day on the two trains
I think WCRC are owed a vote of thanks for their determination to run something this year. With the lack of foreign tourists and probable general reluctance to travel, it will almost certainly run at a loss so let’s hope we will be back to normality next year. I suppose there will be a small boost for the local economy with many enthusiasts, including me, going up there and spending money we otherwise wouldn’t

 

I share your sentiments, though am struggling to see how an enclosed offering like this will align with government policy and advice. However, those questions are at a personal level largely academic as I suspect the odds of my being able to persuade the family that we should visit Scotland, let alone go on the Jacobite, are below their normal (non-existent) level

 

I take your point but how do they (the images I've mentioned) contribute to a thread that's concerned with operations today?
Not so long ago a certain poster was rightly warned about swamping a certain part of the forum with photo collections whilst genuine up to date news could end up getting lost because it was buried.

It really is unfair to have one rule for one and another for another.
@Big Al explained that they would be getting moved when Jacobite ops were to start so people have had plenty of warning that this would happen.
I really can't see what the problem is.

 

I don't know why exactly you've done this Alan, Had there been any complaints? or was it just (as it seems) a personal whim? There had been a fair few complimentary posts, members (as far as I can see), were enjoying something in these difficult times..................and now we've got this.........a divided forum.

This is 37409 at Norwich in 2018.
After all it used to go to Fort William and Mallaig in the 1980's and 1990's.
It did some work on the West Highland some years ago so just thought I'd drop this one here.

At least the hillside hasn’t come down. I’ve seen the water build up pretty bad there before as it cascades off the hills after a bout of extreme weather. Slightly further along there was a small washout a few years back, nothing like that though.

I’d say it’ll take a lot less time to rebuild the formation and re-ballast than it would to stabilise the hillside so I’d be hopeful we’ll be fine.

 

They seem to have spent a lot of money netting the rockfaces rather than stabalising the soft land. I'm sure there has been some trouble here before.

 

The “Trouble” as you refer to it is caused by a lack of trees caused by an infestation of Deer that is now becoming borderline laughable. Some estimate 1m now roam Scotland.

Proper land management may well have prevented this.

 

If you say so but I suspect that there is a lot more to it than that. Lets leave the simplistic sound bites where they belong.
