I doubt that was the coach number. GWR no 5050 was a diag S17 4-wheel second of 1893 - so not likely to be involved here. Dining cars were numbered 9500 and upwards... Could be for fresh water? Many remote structures like signal boxes had no running water and it was delivered daily. Just a guess...

That's so moth-eaten, for a moment I was wondering if it was 1862! Then I saw the "BR-WR"...

W5050 wouldn't have been a GWR carriage number. It might have been the number of a BR-built Western Region carriage, but it wouldn't have been a restaurant car. An ex-GWR carriage in Western Region days would have had a number of the format WxxxxW.

Indeed, I think whatever it is that "W" prefix suggests it was B(W) rather than GWR.

GWR 5050 was a Collett bow ended gangway third, Diagram C54, Lot 1383 of 1927. It would have been renumbered W5050 immediately after nationalisation, becoming W5050W in the early 50s when the Mk1 stock was introduced. It was withdrawn in March 1961. However it is not obvious why such an object would be associated with it. For completeness E5050 was a Mk 1 TSO, which never carried a W prefix.

Speculation time. That bucket looks shaped for carrying rather than pouring. ie it would be a lot easier to carry than a conventional bucket. It might be optimised for carrying comfort rather than load. So speculation - what would a platelayer greasing points or fishplates use to carry grease?

After a stint at Toddington and Winchcombe, the team are back at Broadway and over the last 2 weeks have managed to erect 11 panels of spear fencing and a gate post at the south end of platform two from the Signalbox towards the barrow crossing. Unfortunately, the new lockdown is going to curtail our activities for a while. The angled spear fencing panels habe been made onsite by Peter K, and he is now going to make some for the slope and Jo R is sourcing some more gate posts from a foundry. We need the gate posts as we are putting a gate in the run of fencing to allow access to the top of the bank for grass cutting etc.

We have also been asked to level up the barrow crossing from the ends of platforms 1 & 2, and also to spear fence the section from the signal box towards the area when the station buildings will be constructed on platform 2, so loads to keep us busy, when the restrictions and weather allow us to work. There should be enough spear fencing panels already built to do this. Then the painters will need to apply a second undercoat and a top coat to the fence.

There are photos on the Broadway Station blog and also Jo's Heritage blogs

We managed a further three panels of spear fencing South of the signal box and five North of it today and then ran out of postcrete. I took this photo, but as the sun was very low, you can only really see the five panels at the North end. We are no longer allowed to work as volunteers until after 2nd December, so thats it for a while. Broadway spear fencing 4th Nov 2020.JPG

I like the picture and I started to type that you’ve captured a bitter-sweet moment but in fact that would be the wrong thing to say. The picture is testimony to the efforts and achievements of a lot of people, and it might just help to inspire people elsewhere working away on their own projects, large and small. Hopefully the lockdown is just a temporary interruption to your activities!

As you will probably know from the Broadway Station Blog, we have been allowed back to work at Broadway. We were planning to instal further spear fencing panels, but unfortunately, we have had to do work at the north end of our line. This is at Springfield Road bridge, just outside our pallisade fencing and gates. Due to persons clearing the ballast under the fencing, they have been getting into the wagons in the siding. We therefore concreted in concret blocks to stop this, but the little b***ers smashed a concrete block and again gained entry.

We have some old 4 foot spears, surplus to requirements, so spent last Wednesday driving these into the ballast in front of the concrete blocks with an 18 pound sledge hammer. 31 spears were driven in, so we now have a spear fence underground, as they were driven in about 3ft 6" each. A passer by walking his dog said that he had seen some 10 - 12 year olds digging up ballast last Sunday and says he will take photos if he sees them again.

It will be interesting to see if our extra efforts are successful. We also have managed to put up several more spear fencing panels, and have gone as far as we can towards the proposed platform 2 building. Gate posts are being made to enable us to put in a gate at the south end and we can then carry on the spear fencing to finish at the barrow crossing. We have enough spears to make about another 15 panels, which should be more than enough for now.

This picture gives you an idea of what P2 looks like with spearhead fencing.

    IMG_20210329_110706090.jpg

The little gate was specially made to fit the gap for the stairs down to the locking room.
Lamp tops will come at a later date, it is felt that it's too early to buy them, as they would just slowly suffer the weather, with little benefit.

The other side looks like this:

    IMG_20210424_115332908_HDR.jpg
Sorry about the train obscuring the spearhead fence, you probably didn't want to see that :)

We have a design for a P2 building, and a team ready to build it, but there's no money. While the 'no money' bit is understandable, on the other hand the building and canopy teams are getting older all the time, and may no longer be available when the building moves higher up the priority list.

Dammit, I wish I didn't live at the other end of England, chained to a full time job :(
Am I correct in recalling that the P2 building will be a slightly enlarged version of the original?
You all have created an extremely beautiful station. One which, when it is complete, will be the jewel in the railway's crown, if it isn't already.

What sort of building are you thinking of size-wise?

Would crowd funding be practical to dig the footings and lay the slab... something to start the process...

As the main building is 50% longer than originally, it was felt the P2 building could be stretched a bit to keep the proportions. There was a first design, made by the builder, but this was of the 'box section steel canopy' type an did not well reflect the original. After the success of the 2018 main building, the P2 building was redrafted to mirror the P1 structure in construction. However, it's length could not be just any old length, but had to be a multiple of the original purlin lengths, which is 7m each. The first purlin spanned the gap between the end of the building and the footbridge (on P2 actually in the correct position), the second formed the roof of the Waiting Room, and we propose to add a third purlin's length. So the new building would have two rooms. Their function is not yet decided, but a museum and a mess room for the maintenance gang would be on the list of suggestions.
If my memory serves me correctly, three purlins' length would bring it to half way along the P1 building. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the full area to hand (so many pictures....) but this one shows where the southern end will be :

    IMG_20210424_115304631_HDR.jpg

Remember that this is a zoomed picture, so the distances are a bit distorted.

The little posts on the right show the proposed end of the building (nearest) and the proposed end of the 'Gents' (furthest post) which wouldn't be an actual gents, but a store room for maintenance materials, as at Toddington. It would look like the original Gents though. There is a third, nearer post to show the northern end of the building, but it's out of shot. You'll have to go there and see for yourself :). We can't have a real Gents on P2 as there is no foul water drain. Originally the foul water was simply allowed to percolate away, or mix in with the storm water drain at the rear.

The spearhead fence will stop by the furthest of the little posts.

There was a proposal to lay the foundation slab, to get things started as some have suggested, but COVID put an end to the company's means for the moment.

Thank you, I hadn't realised that the P2 waiting room was so big at Shirley. Certainly an inspiration.

Yes, any budget would be on a materials cost basis. We have a station construction team, and a steel fabrication team. We even have some materials on site, as bricks etc were over ordered for the P1 building. I don't see the company will to do it though, much as the two teams are keen to see it built. At the moment the phrase ' non essential ' keeps popping up :(

Hopefully things will change soon. It will be really good to see passengers once again getting off at broadway to walk to the village, even better when the new timetable comes into effect hopefully in July when an earlier train from cheltenham will enable more time to enjoy the delights of broadway. I’m driving this coming bank holiday Monday on 7903 with the projected other loco being 35006’s first public runs this year. Very much looking forward to seeing the station again, I think the team did an amazing job. Hope to see some of you this weekend, the merchant should be worth coming to see. I will add it’s out on test this week after maintenance so like all old steam engines, things can change.
