random question i know but does anyone know which bridge tornado will cross? will its up journey be over the high level and down the KE7 bridge (a.k.a. anti-clockwise) or vice versa? or will tornado be turned somewhere (does heaton have a turntable?) and use the KE7 bridge twice?

 

I would assume KE bridge twice. The loco is usually turned on these York - Newcastle runs. I belive restriction on the High Level bridge mean large 'pacific' are not allowed over.

 

...unless it's more convenient for to do so ... such as when 71000 spadded at Tyne Yard and was hauled over the High Level Bridge by a Class 66.

 

I've got my ticket for the saturday, and the wording is very guarded about whether forward facing means both ways or not - it implies they don't know if the stock will be turned as a whole or not.

After the 71000 SPAD I was dissapointed to find that my seat at the back of the train was STILL at the back of the train on the way home...

 

Full times are now available at www.uksteam.info. These suggest that the complete train will be turned via the King Edward Bridge triangle. Also the return on Sunday is booked to stand at both Birtley Jc and Ferryhill S Jc, hence the longer overall time.

Even if the stock is turned, tour passengers are generally advised to sit as on their ticket for one journey and the other way on their return. Still means you may be at the back of the train both ways though...

 

Im on a train to Glasgow going up the ECML on that so im going to be looking out of the window alot.

If you are out photting 60163 on Saturday 31st Jan why not finish your day with a nightshoot at the Tanfield Railway? Have a proper 1960s North East Day out with an A1 on the ECML and an evening NCB shed bash!

Back To Backworth Night Shoot 31st Jan 2009

The event will run from approximately 1700-1930 at the ex NCB Marley Hill shed. Ex Backwoth Colliery Austerity No.49 will be in steam and used with Gamma and Progress to recreate a typical NCB shed scene of the 1960/70s. Various scenarios are planned to provide some variety and no doubt other engines (Renishaw etc) will have lights pointed at them at some point. Cost is £10 payable to The Tanfield Railway (but all the monies for the nightshoot will be going to Sittingbourne Rescue Appeal).

 

So is the diesel attached at Newcastle? Surely we're not going to have a 67 on the back all the way are we?

 

You would expect the diesel to attach at Newcastle, on the London end of the Train, drag the consist out of newcastle, around the triangle at the south side of the King Edward. Tornado to lead into Tyne Yard for Servicing, then the diesel to pull the lot back into Newcastle, then diesel to be un attached.

With 13 coaches on, dont think adding a diesel for the run is an option!!!

Even Tornado would be pushing it to get to 75mph, with 110 tons on the back of a 550 ton train!!!

Some coaches have 'maximum load 2 1/2 tons evenly distributed' for a reason, i can believe 500 odd people can weight a few ton.

 

11x2 is 22 11x0.5 is 5.5 so you get 27.5? Christ that's a lot!

 

The figures which I believe BR used to allow a guard to give the driver a gross figure for the weight of a train was 18 communters to the ton or 15 long distance passengers. This is not becuase you had to be thinner to commute but due to the comparative lack of luggage for commuters (we are taking pre-laptop days here!).

The restriction signs of "Maximum load X tones evenly distributed" apply to luggage vans and don't include passengers in the saloon of brake coaches.

Heritage Railways, and probably railtours, tended to work on the communter figure as the number of passengers with luggage is quite small (but not non-existance for longer lines - I have even seen a roll of carpet being loaded to an NYMR train at Whitby once!)
