I've been left this picture of what I think is a Chevrolet CMP C15A army truck. (I could be wrong!)

The picture was taken in 1945/1946 near Naples.

Can anyone say more? Can the cabside number tell us anything? The number is A 5932731.

Thanks, I was hoping not to have to sign up to another forum. It's a good idea, but let's see what develops. I wonder if you can look that number up?

That certainly looks like the one, thanks.
How interesting what the forum can throw up.
I was wondering about the number, if that can tell us anything.

I have a picture of an ambulance train/carriage as well. All just post WW2 end in Italy.

Is the cabside number the chassis number of the vehicle (with a letter prefix) = the Army ID number?

Our group used a recovery version as our towing vehicle for several years after being restored from scrap condition......

    88-335a.JPG

Our Museum Chairman at the time was an ex Army Major, and I remember he did a lot of research into the history of the vehicle when it was restored to make sure it was "right" !

Although still owned by the Museum, it was put ot on loan to some other organisation who had a "WSR" type happening and it is stored somewhere in Essex at the moment - we think....

All the vehicles I have seen have a similar number, prefixed by one letter of the alphabet, hence I thought you could look that up somewhere.

The towing vehicle and the ambulance in my picture look to be the same. I understand it was a British design, manufactured in Canada.

Ours was a Canadian built Chevrolet C60S.

For some reason, the largest number of surviving chassis of that type I have come across is in New Zealand, and when looking for a photo of one there, I found this one at Wanaka in 2000........

Looks a different bodybuilder for the ambulance section to your photo though.

There are Ford versions as well as Chevrolet.
apparently the differences are such that you need a rivet counter to distinguish.
The A in the number indicates Ambulance and the rest of the number is the WD Registered number.
