Do we have to do this? It feels pretty unnecessary. I broadly accept the point, nuance is paid lip service on the internet, but the facts speak for themselves. There are a lot less trees than there: 1. should be according to the ecologists and policy makers running the show and 2. there used to be going with historical trends. (as has been pointed out above)

Suspect away. Im merely conveying the facts as they are. This isn't my opinion rather the objective viewpoint of the professionals far more informed on this than I may ever be.

On that speed/camera point, attitudes south of the border a a LOT more liberal on speeding than in Scotland. I say this as someone who has driven between Aberdeen and London a lot over the last 6 years. Scottish police will hammer you. I don't know why, but when I cross the border a "judicious use of speed" loses all meaning.

90 on the M40 seems to be de-rigueur.
90 on the A90 will see you in court.
As for the A9? Not even once. There are unmarked patrols virtually 24/7 and they will follow you for miles down the local roads waiting for you to make the slightest transgression. Which is pretty easy given the considerable caravan traffic in high season.

    Ok, back on topic.

Does anyone have any movements for the 5's etc to come north yet? Is there anything on RTT yet?
Id quite like to see the entourage pass through this year if I can.

The A9 has average speed cameras all the way from the end of the motorway at Bridge of Allan to Inverness. The 70 limit on dual carriegeways does not create much of a problem but 60 on the single carriageway stretches need to be watched. In the summer the road is too busy to do much more but out of season on a straight empty road without a house in sight it can be frustrating.

I notice from today’s Sunday Times that there are suggestions that tourism from England may be blocked if Covid incidence doesn’t fall in England as much as in Scotland.

'Right' for me would be reversing decline, this generation leaving something more biodiverse than we found it - because as it stands at the moment the last 100 years have been hugely damaging and we should not 'manage' further loss of ecosystems when we now know what is happening.

Back on topic, any chance of the Jacobite season being extended? As it stands I am due in Scotland the day the season finishes!

It is possible but I suspect that it is unlikely. The season finishes when it does because once the clocks change it is getting dark by the time of arrival back in Fort William. For this same reason the afternoon Jacobite ceases when it does in September. But there is nothing normal about this season at all and much will depend on how things progress once the operation is up and running. I guess like so much at present it is a matter of wait and see.

Light wise I think you could just about extend the afternoon till the end of September. There’s the possibility of some cracking sunsets whilst heading back along Loch Eil, but that’s very weather dependant.

As for extending the season, the Christmas Jacobite ran when the days are at their shortest so it has been done before.
Like you say though Pete, we’ll have to wait and see!

Sam, I never thought I’d enjoy having anything in my mouth as much as a Dalwhinnie scotch, but this... oh my god! It tastes so good! I hesitate to swallow, and I certainly don’t want to spit it out.

    Oh, what the hell.

    We told you so.

And (following over from Big Al's comment on the Fellsman thread) a nice quarter page shot of Glenfinnan viaduct with 45212 on yesterday afternoon's Jacobite on P.2 of today's Daily Telegraph. It was necessarily a fairly low-key start but positive coverage in most Scottish dailies, too.

Oh, and lovely Scottish summer weather, yesterday - damp!

A bit of passenger news, 1st day loading ok, 2nd day more, 3rd day full to the planned capacity of 200 and it has continued at that since. Scotrail who were monitoring it were amazed by this.

I’m amazed by it as the number of tourists in the Highlands must be well down this year.
A good and well deserved result for WC as the took a huge financial risk in running at all this year

That's great for The Jacobite and for West Coast. That said, the train has so much of a draw all that West Coast had to do was take reasonable precautions and the public would probably respond.

A company with their own coaches, loco and operating systems has to be a winner in most circumstances especially this particular one. So 200 capacity is about 60-70% of normal? That seems to be the future.

Tuesday was a sunny day for 'The Jacobite'. With the current short stop at Glenfinnan, the sun at Beasdale was just on the east side, running 25 mins earlier than usual. A well patronised train headed by the 'K1'.
