I have a question here from a friend who doesn't have an account here. He is thinking about purchasing a Loyalty Pass but would like to know when it will expire if he's not able to buy it before services resume. The SVR site isn't very clear about this. Can someone give the situation? TIA.

My reading of it is if he bought it today November 2021. After 1st August 12 months from the date of purchase.

Thanks, that would have been my guess as well. I'd guess he'll be leaving the purchase until the autumn then.

It strikes me that if that is the case, the SVR is missing a trick by not having big "Buy your LP before July 31st and travel longer for free!" advertising everywhere!

I had a letter about it as my old family pass has run out and how I read it the first loyalty pass you buy last for 15 months as long as bought this year so if you buy now it will start on 1st August and last 15 months

Reading the WSR thread and mention of WSR TV reminds me to point you in the direction of the SVR's YouTube channel, which has three 'restart' videos. Enjoy!

    Farewell to 40.106.

Diesel loco 40.145 is due to run from Barrow Hill to the SVR today to collect fellow class member 40.106 to return it to the ELR via Crewe.

Is this instead of 40135? I understand that was to visit? Change of plan?

In 2018 the SVR signed a contract with the Class Forty Preservation Society to hire one of their Class 40s, initially for a 12 month period. Being fitted with steam heating equipment, it is capable of working passenger services during the winter period. 40106 arrived on the SVR on 2 August as a temporary replacement for the nominated locomotive 40135. In the event, difficulties with completing work on 40135 led to 40106 remaining on hire. 40106 is being maintained at the SVR by SVR-based CFPS members with a knowledge of the Class. It remains an operational loco and has been fired up with no issues.

The CFPS has announced the locomotive will be temporarily leaving the SVR to return to its East Lancashire Railway home. Whilst at Bury they will undertake some heavier maintenance, most of its volunteers live in the north-west, the store of Class 40 spares is all at Bury, and with the current restrictions on social distancing, travel etc, this will be the quickest way to get the required work done. It’s planned for it to be back on SVR metals by the end of September, in good time for the steam heating season.

40145 is doing the taxi service :)

Cheers Patrick, must say there seems to be a decent relationship developing between various groups and the use of diesels at the SVR

Travelled on the Flyer today as part of the trial trains . Just to say , what a fantastic day , Welcoming from the word go, we felt safe , a compartment for our use all day . everyone was friendly

it was a different way to see the railway but one I enjoyed with 90 minutes at the engine house and then a couple of hours in Bridgnorth . Non stop down the SVR on the return , the sun illuminating the river and valley and brooding clouds behind reminded me so much of why I enjoy the railway

How do you think the engine house will be able to cope allowing for social distancing? Looking at the test trains they look like they will be running with 7 0r 8 coaches which I presume is 50 - 55 compartments. Allowing for an average of 4 a compartment you are looking at 200 plus potentially visiting the engine house at a time. Ok not all will have to social distance as they will be in family groups but is that likely to have any impact to the numbers they can take?

I am not sure many places ie Bridgenorth could do 200 and social distancing. Perhaps there are plans to cap bookings?

It is interesting to see how different lines and companies are working this. I’ve just had to travel on Eurostar and then Thalys. Eurostar are capping numbers and basically booking and then moving people to ensure everyone has space, so fewer bookings and they will move you to an emptier carriage. Boarding was by carriage. Thalys, well, other than the masks you wouldn’t think that there was any social distancing at all. All the seats occupied. I had Sting on repeat going round my head. NS, TFL, and Thameslink were all different again.
