Genuine question on reopening from someone who is quite anxious about the virus but would like to visit in the next couple of weeks - how is platform / corridor crowding being avoided - particularly at Highley? It can often feel like quite a crush there even when you haven't got the entire passenger load trying to de-train.

I was on the last test day on friday and it was very well organised once you have your compartment which is yours for the day there is no crowded platforms. People were all just taking there time and respecting social distancing. The situation at highley is so different the train stay for the long there is no rush to get on its in the platform for a long time so there is no crush like a normal day.

To answer this having been today and seeing it in practice, very well. At Highley, the staff were doing a great job of moving everyone off the platform on arrival starting with the carriages in the platform, then once clear the ones off the platform were loaded one by one. There were also plenty of clear and concise on the PA systems at all 3 stations we visited explaining what to do, including clearing Highley platform as soon as possible. Getting back on it was busier but again well managed and passengers were well behaved and respectful of social distancing in the main (certainly more than a visit to a supermarket), so it all felt safe and well managed and was a great day out.

It was fantastic to see the railway back open and you could see the happiness and pride of the volunteers and staff, it felt very much like when the SVR rose again after the flood damage, that kind of occasion, everyone had missed it and now the SVR is back and doing a brilliant job.

Great to see 2857 join the elite group of engines that have carried the SVR reopening headboard again to.

Don't give up this year just yet Davo. The SVR needs to consolidate and make the most of what remains of the summer season, however, I suspect (like other railways) there maybe more options for single travellers later in the year.

It would be a shame also not to mark what is also a very significant year for the SVR, but every step needs to be careful and costed.

Four-and-a-half months later, the Railway is up and running once again. By the end of today (Sunday 2nd August), the SVR will have welcomed 1,400+ visitors on board its first two days of reopening services.

As well as reporting on the weekend’s main event, we have an absolutely packed-to-the-brim edition of Branch Lines for you this month.

Click on the link to read all about it: https://www.svrlive.com/blaug20

The old mans been around for the test trains in the week and was around for the trains yesterday, as he says it's not ideal but it's still letting folks know the railways still alive and kicking.

Can I just add this is a very good read and I was impressed that you had managed to get photos and details of yesterday's trains and have a fully finished publication in my inbox this lunchtime. Congratulations on your efforts and showing how a Premier Line does things.

Out of interest what sort of numbers would the SVR be looking at normally welcoming over a weekend? Some back of the fag packet calculations would see the SVR collecting fares of roughly £9,000 a day if they sell an average of 40 compartments across three trains a day at present. Allowing for a split of adults, kids, pre bookings that would be possibly be in the region of 550 to 600 a day normally.

On social media, it was announced that we have sold out the first 2 days and carried 1400 passengers. Thats not neccesarily 1400 x 75 though.

Has 2857 been for a spin on the Turntable? In some photos it's facing North then in others it's facing south.

It almost certainly won't be, because 1 ticket covers up to 6 passengers

The maximum capacity of each train has been shared internally, but I don't believe it has been made public. However you can probably deduce that the trains run this weekend didn't have 1,400 compartments between them!

1400 X £75 =£105,000. The SVR would be over the moon with that figure!
On the other hand 40 compartments at £75 each is £3,000 per train. Three trains a day is therefore £9,000. I hope you are not a maths taecher:)

It's in the newsletter too: "Whilst the Railway is encouraging advance booking, there may be some on-the-day places available, and this information will be advised on social media and on www.svr.co.uk the day before. " It's online at https://www.svr.co.uk/SEItem.aspx?a=164 - note it's £80 on the day.

Not a maths a teacher as I struggle to convert proper measurements to this funny metric system for my day to day work.

I think anybody would be jumping for joy at that. You have to take into account the amount of shareholders tickets used/ annual pass holders/ working members as well as paying public. From some internal communication. The best figure to go on was 30 compartments per train. Each set is also different. The Bridgnorth set (Mark1s) has 40 compartments. The LMS set has 46 in its current make up and the GW set has 44. The bods in head office will know the figures and no doubt be watching with alot of interest after this weekend, the ticket sales for the coming weeks up until the bank holiday.
