Pembroke Coast Express - 29/7/20

Discussion in 'What's Going On' started by Will RL, Jul 22, 2020.

The very worst section is immediately west of Briton Ferry, on the south side. Having turned the stock both sides have been subjected to the worst damage. Heartbreaking.

My footage of 70000 Britannia or should I say 70022 Tornado recreating the famous 1950's Red Dragon with the Pembroke Coast Express. I filmed her at Filton Bank, Llangewydd and Pwll near Llanelli. Enjoy the video.

Perhaps, in view of Mr Hoskin's having thrown down the gauntlet, it should be 60137 but my favourite would be 60116.

    Or 60165 "Rejoin the EU"...........

Back to yesterday the Brit maybe enjoying its new identity certainly seemed on form. From what what I could tell on the train there wasn't a huge amount of assistance from the rear.

I spoke to a passenger at Bristol Temple Meads last night and he said that bookings on the train had been very good and that virtually all available seating options had been taken up.

I noticed that the inside of the train has been restored to a very high quality. Saphos have certainly upped the game for the travelling public. <BJ>

Good to hear but I'm prepared to bet that the trip was subsidised as we all know about the fine margins on charters and the need for loadings to be far closer to 100% than even the best that can be achieved with social distancing.

Something will have to give in the wider market where there isn't someone with very deep pockets in the background. And logic tells us that a substantial price hike will have to be part of the mix.

Do Saphos own all their own stock? I would imagine that would help them run trips with slightly less expenditure

Definitely Al, but no different to 'loss leader' products in supermarkets simply to get customers through the door.

I'm very pleased to see the railtour market up and running again. <BJ>

Perhaps take a leaf out of the DTG book; have your own nameplate applied to the loco then receive the cast plate at the end of the run ! I recall that the Bluebell Railway cast 8 headboards in 2019 for the visit of 60009 and buyers paid £750:00 per headboard for privileges on board the train that carried your chosen headboard. Anyone fancy their name on 60163 ? Personally would like to see 60097 Humorist on Flying Scotsman but I can't see them fitting straight smoke deflectors. One can only dream !!.

  17. On Wednesday the Brit still had it's smoke deflector handrails fitted and they hadn't cut hand-hold holes in the deflectors either!

If it helps make a tour pay its way in these difficult times then offering the chance to pay for and own a classic headboard used on the loco must surely be a good thing.

Fred - I had hoped to do the same with 70000 when it visited for Giants of Steam last year, quite fancied The Hook Continental myself. Still, got to drive the engine on the Monday after the gala :D

    Regards,

    Dan
