I am not sure anyone on the forum is in any place to accuse anyone else of banging on about things if their own posting histories are anything to go on.

Pots, kettles and all of that.

If it's sitting on the WSR's property, in an area which normally only staff with the relevant safety certificates are allowed access, surely it would be very easy? Whatever "safety" grounds they like could be invoked. The WSR does after all have a reputation for withdrawing the staff passes of people the management don't like.

The idea that one month they would ban all SDJRT members from holding WSR staff passes, then the next month say "You can't see your loco, it's in the shed and the ORR says we can't let you in" is to me a very plausible one.

In which case presumably m'learned friends would get involved with resultant costs and further damage to the WSR's reputation

Blimey, do the majority of the recent posters work as TV drama script writers or something? Have they carried their work on to here by mistake with the next episode ending 'cliff hanger'?

Don't get me wrong, I'm unimpressed with the situation too but these sorts of postings are hardly helpful, is there not enough drama to satisfy you without dreaming up ideas for the next bit as you would like to see it in advance?

I fully agree. This whole discussion is based on the observation of one person who, apparently, didn't see much happening with 53808 during a tour of Minehead Loco Shed last weekend. Maybe the relevant staff had the day off, it was at the weekend after all.

I hate to be a critic, but on this occasion I can fully understand why Nat Pres is not regarded with favour by WSR PLC management and some volunteers. This comes across as anti WSR comment just for the sake of it, frankly.

In many ways I agree, but at the expense of repeating myself it is the behaviour of the PLC that allows such stories to gain credibility, assuming - I hope that that is all they are.

I could not imagine that were a similar story to arise at any other heritage railway that it would be regarded as credible.

I haven't been following the precise intricacies of the latest sub-discussion, but my experience is that if you have a workshop open day, pretty well all work has to stop, simply because of the nature of the work - either because of fumes (such as welding), noise (such as boiler work), heat (such as riveting etc) or the need for operators to concentrate makes it difficult to carry out such work while there are visitors wandering round. It's pretty much the norm in my experience that when you go on a workshop tour, the workshop appears quiet. So I certainly wouldn't judge progress on an overhaul or repair on the basis of what I saw in an hour's wander round.

There is also the nature of the work which means you get occasional quick dramatic and visible spurts of activity, punctuated by long apparent pauses. For example, you could take the motion down on a loco in a couple of hours and it would look like a hive of activity, but then spend weeks machining and refurbishing all the components with essentially no visible progress. Guess which one looks like concerted action - and which one actually takes up the time.

Agreed. It is the the pattern of the behaviour of the current PLC, the chain of events you might say, that makes people think along very different lines to what might be termed the norm. It is, perhaps, important to remember that simply because you wouldn't take a certain course of action, wouldn't behave or react in a particular way to an occurrence this does not mean that you can assume that everyone will act or react in the same way that you do, or believe to be acceptable. Putting it another way, we have organised thefts occurring from time to time in railway preservation, not all involved in preservation pursue their project in the same way as the majority.

Yes, Alan and Peter, I did repeat myself, and I make no apology. It is not unsubstantiated speculation, neither is it based on Jill Jackson's opinion.

Look, I have every faith in the S&DRT passing on such concerns to us, the membership, as and when they see fit. If and when they do communicate we can be confident that such information is accurate and factual. I am sure that they are quite capable of standing up for themselves and fighting for the best interest of the Trust. So why do you need to keep chipping in, supposedly on their behalf, with "inside" knowledge that you cannot/will not substantiate. Why not let them speak for themselves.

That’s fair. But it is dangerous to assume that because a group or individual have acted unconscionably in the past, they must automatically be so doing should anything related crop up.

I’ve no idea what’s happening to 53808 right now, nor any access to inside information. I acknowledge that @jma1009 has good connections to the S&DRT, so can be regarded as a credible source on such matters. However, as previous posts about the status of work on 53808 have been found wanting, I’m inclined to treat this as no more than rumour.

Just to add that such activities always go better with a bit of Railway Esperanto! Not for the delicate ears of the GBP.

88 is due at Ropley in August, as far as i know, no actual date was published, I would expect that all parties will want this over and done with as soon as the loco is fit to be moved, she will need a further inspection when she is on shed on MHR anyway, as she will need to be signed off as fit to run and a boiler test, for the MHR inspectors, followed by a test run. So if any work has not been done, or not done to the inspectors standard( it happens) she can be worked on then,

Very true Pat, i've certainly heard a few choice words used, often when in the confines of an bullield's inner gubbins , one such occation, we were struggling to remove Swanages middle con rod over the pit, and the air was certainly blue, and unknown to us, there was a party of school children being shown round the yard at the time.:oops:
